god im pissed off, was up untill 1am doing the head valve seals looked  all nice and new, set about getting the other one off had to take the engine out 1/2" more hight on the top tube is all i needed!!!!! anyway got the new head on put engine back put it all in wired plumbed ready to go, started her up went first time, then its was missing and poring smoke out the exhaust, took the plugs out 1,2.4 was caked in oil! was soooo close to picking the hammer up, so it looks as if the rings need doing, do i do that or has anyone got an engine they want to get rid of. then i can get her on the road and rebuild the other as a spare or make another frame to put it in??

i havnt done anything with it yet dobber, had a shower and leave it for the night, gonna sort me fork stem out in the morning and get the new front end on, then ile start stripping the engine down so i can see how deep me pockets are going to have to be!!  ive got over the inital rage i was in now and like rod in a way if i do it all now theres know reason why it shouldnt give me some hassel free riding, ive got 6 weeks to get the whole trike finished not much to do after the engine though, by that time ile have the v5 ready for mot, its a do or die deadline as the cars about to give up the goast,and i refuse to buy another when i do about 800/1000 mile a year, the trike will do me and the nipper ;D

I think I paid about £200 for liners/pistons/rings and little end bushes.To do the whole engine came to A LOT of money,but having worked the last 3 years building it,and thrown loads of wonga at it,I had no choice. It was another engine,or leave it in the garage to rot!Ive done all the money I had put by for a car,so Im relying on this trike to get me through the summer and longer!

sounds like were in the same boat now rod in more ways than one, were did you get ypur pistons liners ring kit from?? were the old liners easy to remove??

I got them and other stuff from Michaels of Selby. Ask for Dennis the partsman,he is a diamond!
 The recon people did all the work.

 I was also lucky with the choice of engineers in Chelmsford. They are a real grass roots type place,very down to earth and easy to get on with.

thanks rod ive found some £220 standard or +20 ive stripped the engine today got the crank out and the liners, pistons a shot so im going for the kit,,like you when its done its done and should be ok for some years. i hope :'(

You didnt hang about then? ;D  Apparently there is something about the mains that need torquing down before you do something else.Cant remember what they said now! Make sure you read the manual mate! Have you got a manual? Ive got one on disc,can send a copy if you want.

manual whats this then!!!  had a haynes once when i rebuild a cvh  it made a lovley coaster for my cuppa. same with torque i always do it by feel, but i hate alloy and steel bolts so a torque will be used, got all the settings of the tec page, but the manual sounds a good idea if you wouldnt mind rod thanks ;)

When I got my engine it was really badly cruded up cleaned up everything an got it running, absolutlely perfect ! so I think reading the latest posts I'm bloody lucky! A leak at the front but hey ho goodluck wiv tha build :)

dont count your eggs steve mine been running perfect the last 2weeks, next time i would take no chances and strip it totally from the start, hope you dont get this crap engine infection theses a bug going around :(

Ive run several different types of engines from Rover V8's to A- series over many years,some Ive rebuilt ,some just go on forever(especially Fords). Its just the luck of the draw TBH!
