How about this for a trike engine then?
It's a Smart Car motor.
700cc, 3 cylinder, 6 plug head, turbo, transverse, (rear mounted), 6 speed auto. 700 kilometres since new. Complete with everything except starter motor, including the subframe.
Janie & Dave's mate Liam offered it in exchange for a trike frame ...hmmm

The guy's got the dashboard to go with it too, with all it's electrickery. Not really my thing -I'm a simple ol' Monkey & I like my simple little Reliants, but interesting.

It's no bigger than a Reliant. I'd assumed you could mount it forward like our Reliants, then blank off one drive shaft so that the other runs back to the axle like a normal prop shaft, but Brock says it's probably got a diff in there that'd stop it working with only one shaft.
So it'd have to be rear mounted, like a miniature VW, (with probably more power), or forward mounted with a VW type box like the Swedish VW trikes.
An interesting project for someone.

or mount it like the reliants and send the other drive shaft to a bevel box at the front wheel (i guess all wheels would have to be same size) and have a 3 wheel drive system

Yoda teknical genius

A 3 x 3 Reliant -hmmm!
Brock says to mate it to a standard Reliant gearbox for a trike with a big boost of power. Not as pretty an engine as the Reliants though. I was more interested in going the other way & mating a Reliant motor to the Smart 6 speed auto gearbox.

as yoda says fly by wire! complex beasties.would make a good trike if you could sort the electrics side of things! a couple of useless facts on the smart car!
1, you cant change the oil without a suction tool!(no sump plug)
2 it has the highest turbo boost pressure of any standard production car! 18psi the average is between 5 and 9 psi
there you go more usless info! Grin

Seriously, can't wait to see what you do with this motor.
I'm hoping it'll provide us with a wealth of material for the site! Not just techy tuning info but hints & tips on engine work in general, use of workshop tools, an explanation of just how a supercharger works & the maths involved in working out the best configuration etc. Lots & lots of spin off articles as well as the main build.
Bet you wish you'd kept quiet now don't you!  Wink
