Title: Clive's Chopper Build
Post by: Clive on January 14, 2010, 05:53:32 PM
Wellllllllllllllllllllll, I've just spent a five hour round trip to buy this!!! :D :D :D :D

Thought I may as well start a thread on the build, although most of the build threads on here are showing how to do stuff, mine will be asking how to do it!!!!!

Gonna spend the weekend, laying out the bits, making a plan of attack, and a list of things to do, and get!! (I've got a Tee shirt to paint....if it ever arrives!), then it's on with this! I think the last took 56 days, and there's 101 til the Monkey run......................we'll see!! :D

Anyhow. lets start this off as it'll probably go on, with a question:

There are three possible paint schemes for this, a quick straw poll would be good as to the most popular!

Fire Engine red, with Gold leaf, and Black pinstriping
Lairy (Sp?) Yellow
Old School style hot rod-dy - Flat black, scallops, faded etc

Your my new best friend!!!!!!!! :D Seriously, you'll be sick of me by.......about the end of next week I reckon!! I've just ordered a Haynes, but already have questions!!!!

you got a tin of biccies thrown in too.  ;D

Just nuts I'm afraid.....and bolts!!! :D Don't think the gold leaf will be as intricate as that, but that kind of thing! You surprised me, I thought you'd have gone for the lowbrow, old school flat Black!!!

You think I'm a low brow Monkey? I'm hurt.  :(
I appreciate a quality job. I also happen to love those old 70s Bay Area lowriders.

I can answer both those posts with the same answer!!!

That's the plan!!!!! :D

I would've taken the seat off already, but I can't shift the (now rounded inside) Allen bolt that holds the front on!! Tomorrow will begin with a thank you to the god of power tools!!!!! :D

Next job....cut that huge seat off and replace it with a smaller solo one  ;)

Finally got the seat off, cleaned up, cut down to a single seat now! Just waiting to weld another nut onto the top for fixing (as I had to angle grind the last one off to get the seat off), before gluing the newly cut foam on, and then finding somewhere to re-cover it for me!!!!

That was all I achieved today! :(

There's a couple of upholsterers in the Links for Commercial Purposes bit of the forum if it's any help Clive.
So what's the seat look like now?

Title: Re: Clive's Chopper Build

Smaller!! :D

Will post a pic later on!

So what's the seat look like now?

Like this!

If I had the materials, and skills, I would have re-made the seat pan, but I don't so I am going to re-cycle the old one! Just waiting to re-weld a nut onto the mounting hole where I had to grind the old one off and then the two layers of sponge ('cos I'm not as young as I used to be :D) will get glued on! I've found a mate with an industrial sewing machine, whose going to give the cover a go. If it's crap then I'll get one made, but I reckon he'll do a decent job!!

In addition, I've managed to paint the inside (?!?!?!) of the headlight!

And started to strip the black paint from what's left on the frame and forks! The forks haven't come off yet, as I'm still waiting for my 17mm hex to arrive! As you can see, the forks are mega-rusty, is getting them re-chromed a good option, or sourcing a new pair more economical?

You may have noticed that I've given the engine a damn good ignoring so far, but that's because a very nice man from Somerset has donated me another engine that definitely works in exchange for some paintwork!! :D

Meant to also say, I'm looking for a 'mustang' / sportster style tank for it!! If any of you have any ideas of bikes with that style tank, that you know of, or owned in the past then feel free to let me know! I know the '08 YBR125 has a tank like that!!

Clive

Title: Re: Clive's Chopper Build
Post by: tbone on January 19, 2010, 10:16:54 PM
Why? tank looks good as is

Title: Re: Clive's Chopper Build
Post by: Clive on January 19, 2010, 10:38:59 PM
I just think one in this style will be more fitting!!!

Obviously, once one has been found, and I've made sure it's 'the one!' :D, then the one I have at the moment will be up for grabs if anyone's interested!!

Clive

PS Anyone any idea what bike this is off, and whether the badges can be removed without damaging the integrity of the tank?

Give Dracken a try -his link's in the Links page of the main website, (JW Motorcycles). He stocks a wide range of replacement fork tubes -& gives a discount to MMMotors forum members.  ;)

Someone else has said a GN400 too!! Will wait out!!!

Next question. Any top tips for getting the stupid allen-y type bolts out of the brake discs? And before someone (Tony :D) says use an allen key thing, I've bent two of them trying, and still not a smidge of movement!!!!

Right, am finally feeling better!!!!! ;D ;D

So I now have some serious catching up to do on my timescale for this project!! (After finishing Valleysboy's tee shirt!! :D)

A visit to Toad produced the forks I'm after (and some other bits, cheers buddy!!), and I now have a complete second engine in the garage (which is unfortunately in complete kit form, I mean Haynes manual style!) which will take some of my time up I'm sure, seeing as I've NEVER built one before!!

Dropped the frame off to be sandblasted today, and intend to make a big dent in the work this weekend!!!

Clive

Got the frame back from blasting today!

into this

What's happened to the Sportster tank the bike came with Clive?
Nice clean engine -blasted or painted? Just shovel the bits into it. It'll be fine.  ;D

Title: Re: Clive's Chopper Build
Post by: Clive on February 05, 2010, 08:28:49 PM
That's how to do it isn't it! Shove them in, fire it up, and they'll all sort themselves out into order!! Kind of hope so as that's what I was planning to do!!! :D :D :D

The engine was pretty clean when I got it, but it's got a coat of VHT aluminium paint on now, the same as my last chop. Just think the black engines that kawasaki did always look grotty!

As for the tank, it's now got a 'mustang' style one to go on (Thanks to Mr Toad  :)). The sportster one is going begging if you, or anyone else wants it? It's got quite a 'classic' paint job on it, the cap has been painted over the rust, but has the tap too!!

Clive

I love the Sportster tank shape -perfect chop style I reckons.
Haven't got a project to fit it at the moment, but interested if it's cheap! Wouldn't it be ideal to display your painting skills on at the Basingstoke Transport Festival?

Thanks Clive. Will collect it from you at the Basingstoke show if that's O.K
Coo, Jaffa Cakes. I haven't had one in ages. Fancy one now.
So what have you done to your frame then?

Title: Re: Clive's Chopper Build
Post by: Clive on February 06, 2010, 08:45:23 PM
Nothing too drastic, just ground off the rear foot peg mounts, and a couple of spurious leftover bits from the original frame!

Oh, and managed to start a helmet, just to keep my hand in at the old painting malarky!!

As an aside, after seeing the pic of JJ you posted, I'm feeling more and more drawn to building/buying a reliant trike!!!!!!! :D :D

If we bump into each other at the Picket Piece show, you can have the tank then! Or pop in on your way, and get it then!

Clive

Title: Re: Clive's Chopper Build
Post by: Manky Monkey on February 06, 2010, 11:29:46 PM
JJ's was built by a guy called Mick in Kent. He also built the Honda trike Muffin's missus, Michelle's just bought. He just keeps churning them out! Only met him once, but his preferred style seems to be streamlined & panelled in -an ideal canvas for your paint skills?
You cannot resist the call of the mighty Reliant!

Today, I have:

Primed the tank

Painted the front wheel

Started to build the engine/gearbox!!! :o Had to stop at this point, as had no jointing compound >:( Quite pleased with myself for getting this far with it!!

Oh, and finished painting the helmet! Just to prove that painting doesn't need to involve airbrushes, and all sorts of fancy stuff, this was completely done with masking tape, and halfords rattle cans!! Not worried about the shiny finish, as when it's completely dry it's getting flatted, and then a Matt finish clear applied!

So, back to working on this!! :D :D

Finished the frame with another coat of yellow. Then decided to change the colour scheme slightly. The wheels now gold, and the forks look like this (well, ones done!), (pearlescent white, gold, bronze, and yellow!!) prior to clearcoat.

Funny how things change quickly isn't it!!!

This now has no chance of being finished by me, and so is now up for sale!!!

It comes in completely kit form!! Although I think (apart from wiring) is 95% there ready to be finished and re-assembled. It'll come with the one engine complete, and a second in bits. A set of carbs for each engine. Three shelves of bits. Two front wheels, one in black, one in gold. Rear wheel un-painted. Both tyres (one front, one rear) are almost new. Two front yolks, new horns, new fork seals (still in their packet), nice shaped tank, partially painted by me! The only bits I don't have to hand right now are the seat (being re-covered), and one of the exhaust down tubes, but these can be collected by me and sent on to the buyer!

The V5 is in my name, and it's SORN (for obvious reasons!)

Sad to see it go not completed, but means must etc etc. I looks like I may have to sell the Vespa as well!! :-\

Anyone interested, then please give me a shout, either through PM, or on my mobile 07950 569620.

PS Mr Toad sir, don't worry about getting the other wheel to me now, sorry!!
