Most scholars agree his nationality was Roman. born in Cappadocia an area now known as Turkey.
Samuel Johnson said " Patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel". Thats according to Boswell. but he doesn't provide any context for how the remark arose. They think he was talking only about false patriotism.
