EEC
« on: October 30, 2010, 04:17:18 PM »

taken from another forum
any one heard of this  Huh

EEC Legislation

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Some of you may have noticed that our friends in Broossuulls are attempting to introduce legislation which stops Motorcyclists doing there own servicing or making modification of ANY sort to their bikes...

This includes the fitting of aftermarket parts as mundane as Top Boxes and the like......this will render the Harley Davidson Parts Catalogue dead in the water overnight.....so I am led to beleive

What you may not know is this legislation will also apply to 3 wheeled vehicles......and as reliant robins are no longer produced....I guess that means us..........

Any BTW members out there know if your organisation is helping the two wheeled boys to take a stance against that idiot who is behind this..........just asking?

Same thing's happened with cars as well, but this goes back a couple of years now. Best thing is to fire off a mail to the guys here .........   http://www.the-ace.org.uk/  ... with your concern, or wait for Kev (Kapri) to see this thread.

H, not really within our ( ACE) remit but what about MAG , they are normally on the ball with stuff like this ? It has been tried with cars as well in the past and will no doubt be tried again.

The largest Rider's Rights Group in Europe is the BMF (British Motorcyclist Federation)

http://www.bmf.co.uk/home/index.php

Membership is £26 per year for single or £32 for joint.

And of course there's also MAG (Motorcycle Action Group)

Membership is £25 per year for single or £37.50 for joint

http://www.mag-uk.org/en/index/a6296

Both of these fight for the motorcyclist (and those equally effected), but they can only do it if they are supported by us - it costs money for a start, and it sure helps for them to be able to say they represent a certain number of motorcyclists.

So, depending on one's views, we have the following options (assuming cash allows)
1    Pay subs which will support a pressure group, and be active within the association.
2    Pay subs which will support a pressure group, be relatively passive and allow the pressure group to continue
3    Try and get any clubs you belong to to affiliate
4    Be active on an independent footing
5    Other

I used to be fairly active (meeting with the Transport Minister, letters to MPs, rallies etc, for chunk of the 80's and some of the 90's I guess, but to tell the truth, after a while it can wear ya down), have belonged to both groups over the years, and am still a paid up member of one (have been for well over 25 years).

Many clubs are nowadays affiliate members of one or other of the pressure groups, which is all good news (in my book anyway).

As Tesco would say, “every little helps”.

Here are a couple of useful websites should you wish to contact your 'political' representatives.

Hope some of that helps, and apologies if I sounded like I was getting on my soapbox!! Roll Eyes

Useful info Tony.
The American hotrod scene's just starting to wake up to the threat of legislation against their hobby. Even though it's a multi million dollar industry over there, they face the same creeping uniformity we do.
Over the years I've belonged to the BMF & 3 different branches of MAG. The bike club I used to belong to was also affiliated to both, (as well as CAMRA, the campaign for real ale!). I was at some of the big London Trafalgar Square demo runs of the 80s & 90s as well as plenty of smaller runs. I'm not quite so involved in the bike scene any more, but if you build & run anything unusual you're going to come up against "the men from the ministry" at some point. If we want customising to continue, we need to keep an eye on their plans & make sure we're not quietly legislated off the roads.
For British hotrodders, Kev Rooney is very well informed about upcoming regulations. Regular updates are posted on the ACE website, (Association of Car Enthusiasts), here:

Terry T, aswering as an individual member of BTW we have not so far joined BMF as a complete association to date. Each year we usually sign up a different area but we have never had the cash to joine en-bloc although some of our members are members of BMF and/or MAG in their own right.

It may well be a subject to bring up again at the next AGM
