I haven't got any fish so I think they are great. We get one at a pond Alfie gets walked at. I used to have one in the field behind my house in Wales. I just love to see them flying. So ancient looking. So pterodactyl.

Both are really neat photos. Did you have a good zoom lens BG as they usually fly before you get that close?

I think I zoomed but then blew it up some more on the computer which is why it's not very sharp.  It was taken in a hurry as I stepped out of my back door and shot quick - it flew off almost immediately.  It was contemplating next door's pond, sitting on the fence between their garden and the next neighbour again.

Bee-yoo-tiful plumage!

So what's the difference in your 2 boids' colour schemes then? Male & female or different makes of Heron?

Good question!

I don't know the answer but I think it may be more to do with the quality of light at the time of the picture, and distance from the camera to the subject - mine was much nearer so the colours come out brighter.

Looked it up in my bird book - apparently the one with grey down the back of the neck, and a grey beak, is a juvenile.  So Olds is having problems with a juvenile delinquent!

Grin When I lived in Surrey with Tazet, we used to get wild green parakeets in the garden. Some had a red ring around their necks & others didn't. That was a juvenile/adult thing too as

BG is correct of course. It's a juvenile. We have had adult ones visit occasionally.
There is a large flock of parakeets in Richmond Park, that make one hell of a din in the evenings.
