Standard Reliant is fitted with an 88 degree thermostat and some folk fit a 92 degree one in winter .
Never run a Reliant engine without antifreeze / summer coolant at a 25% coolant / 75% water mix in the summer and a 45% coolant / 55% water mix in the summer .
The Radiator should only be filled to just over the internal fins or any expansion will go out the overflow stub if not fitted with an expansion bottle .
Is there a water hose connected to the rear of the head ?

Why do you need to let it cool down Gazz? What's the symptoms? Is it throwing water out of the radiator filler neck? Being an aluminium engine, the casings do get hot to the touch -as Professor Fifer says, they're a hot running engine anyway.

Does the water hose from the rear of the engine attach onto one of the two hose connections the water pump ?
Do you have a short 90 degree angle water hose from the other hose connection on the water pump to the side of the thermostat housing ?

Should be fitted with a bypass hose .
Have a look at the workshop manual on my site and go to the Cooling Section and click on E ; WORKSHOP ; cooling and scroll down to page 3 where you will see the parts .
