Title: Sculptures
Post by: Manky Monkey on May 15, 2011, 09:33:21 AM
We've all seen those figures in souvenir shops & garden centres haven't we, the ones made from old nuts & bolts n stuff.
Ever looked at 'em & thought you could do better? Been tempted to have a go yourself?
Well have a look at these.

46 year old Australian artist, James Corbett lives in Ningi, Queensland, Australia, with his wife Jodie and creates his works from salvaged 50s & 60s car parts.
He says "I was working in a warehouse of scrap and a guy I know, who races stock cars, showed me a winner's trophy made from cogs & pistons. I looked at it and I thought that I could do a much better job, so I started making my own sculptures.
After a period of time, people began to become more and more into what I was doing and now what do I with my life is a dream come to reality."

On average, each piece takes a little over two weeks of work, but the larger pieces can take much longer. His favourite donor cars are British & French.
James says that welding the parts and the construction of the sculpture is not the most time consuming part. "Often the longest part of the process is finding old parts suitable for sculpture."
The ram, made from spark plugs, recently sold for a whopping $23,000
James is exhibiting his work in the gallery of John Davies in Moreton-in-Marsh, Gloucestershire, England, until December 19th.

-still think you can do better?

This is the Chartist sculpture in Blackwood in South Wales made from nuts welded together by engineering apprentices.

That's impressive Cabby.
I remember there being a horse built from agricultural parts at the Bath & West Showground.

I never actually saw it but our friends that live there told us the story that the apprentices made an extra "bit" and under cover of darkness fitted it to the sculpture. There was a big row about it so I`m told. ;D ;D ;D ;D

The sculpture is of a miner, even got an old Davey lamp I think and it`s all see through.

Hopeless with names mate, but faces that's another thing.
And when i say over the mounting it's probably 30 miles,
if they ever went to motor cycle sprints or circuit racing or club runs they may know me.

they have a big party every year at the beginning of August in memory of Stan, Von`s brother. Not far from Crumlin and the Patriots clubhouse.

I could never achieve anything like those but I have a dream of learning to weld and producing sculptures from bike parts.  I'm finally retiring at the end of August so you never know........

its hard enough making somfink look good from new, fresh material but to see the shapes & forms from old stuff & get it lookin that right is another ball game.
