when you turn the ignition key on. warning lights come on  (ignition and oil if i remember rightly)  then once you start the engine, these go out...   How?  (in the "wiring" sort of context)

i know my way around wiring but just not these warning lights...

like i say... call me daft.

Your oil light is switch operated, just a make/break connection. Low pressure, or ignition on, then the light is on, correct pressure, i.e engine running, light off.
The ignition light is fed through the alternator and is slightly more complex. With the ignition on, the light picks up a feed through the alternator, from the battery. When the engine is running the battery voltage is monitored by the alternator regulator, if correct voltage is present, the alternator cuts off the supply to the ignition lamp, no light, if the voltage is too low then the feed is switched on again and so the light lights.

explained like that makes it seem so simple as compared to a wiring diagram wher most tend to give up after a quick look.
