Title: workshop project
Post by: spanners on December 04, 2013, 07:20:38 PM
well if things ever ,buck up,, around here i,ll get back to my garage rebuild / new workshop project

lots to think about / consider like,,,

pit or no pit (cost is enormous and cant go high enough for a lift/ramp)

space is tight == base area =15ft x 34ft approx

budget  ,,ha,ha,ha,,  little as possible  ;)

roof - pent or pitched,

IDEA,S please

ps . i,v had a couple of varius  ideas quoted for ==== bloody expensive ,,

thats not that small...on second thought we've seen the size of some of the things you'll be working at  :)

how high can you go? could you go for a scissor lift type thing which sinks into the floor, any hight is better than working on the floor. i have heard a pit increase's your rates by a lot.

roof's personal preference but pitched would be mine, although my sheds got a wagon roof and fits well in a rural setting also gives a bit more head room at the edges

mine cost around 10 grand to build but i bought s/h tin and steel work but paid someone to do everything except the wiring which Alan and I did over a couple of weekends.it took me 5 years to save for that bloddy shed and now i only reluctantly go in it :(

You pay higher council tax if you've got an inspection pit?

we call it rates but yes i was told the charge would be higher if i had a pit althought that may vary on the main land

I remember seeing fibreglass inspection pits at a show somewhere. A bit like a pond moulding, with steps cast in & pre-wired lights. Just dig a hole & drop the moulding into it.

looked at them and also the steel ones built to VOSA specs == even more expensive  they have cross braces in them , you dig an oversize hole cement blind the base the wacker it,, then drop the pit box in then weight it down ,(fill with water or other heavy objects) pour concrete around the outside ,, leave to set,, then remove the cross braces, all in all bl##dy expensive , due to the price and the labour cost/time involved.

= delivery +labour+digger hire+concrete to go around it == somewhere in the region of £2300.

I paid 600 quid for a second hand 2 post lift. One of the local garages has one fitted outside, (limitless headroom!). No room to do that?

nope not really enough room and by rights youre supposed to have planning permission to have a vehicle lift or ramp outdoors,, :o :o

that was plan number 1 but,,, not enough room to build down the side , and to get the best price on ready mix the base has to be done in one go 15ft x34ft--ish, ;)

Had a bad experience with a pit. Everyone was asleep so I used to turn my headlight off as I dropped down the drive. The road was high up and the light would shine right in the windows of the bedrooms. Yep, you've guessed it. Someone took the planks out of the pit cover (me) In the dark I missed the pit and parked the bike and as I put my foot down, there was the pit! In I went, followed by a bloody heavy Triton, upside down. Broken foot, a very strange gash in my leg and a ruined alloy tank. It was like the world came to an end, pitch black laying in a pit pinned down by a fuel leaking bike and I was desperate for a fag!!  The old man came out and after all the laughing and pi** taking he hauled me out and chain blocked the bike out while I attended hospital. Bloody pit.

Always remember what car you have when you decide to do a service over a pit, our coach painter Dennis forgot one dinner time at work and drove his Reliant Robin over/down by going front wheel first. A very red faced Dennis appeared round the canteen door asking for a lift but would'nt tell us why until we saw it, it was at about 45 degrees, the tapered body had jammed on the pit edges, we did'nt let him forget about it for a long time.

so as it happens,, today and tommorrow was forecast as the best as regards weather that we are likely to see for the next week or so

so ,mr ready mix ( lafarge) was called this morning to order the delivery ,,,,the price had gone up  :o :o so they were promtly ,sacked,, ::)

and more phone calls made,,
which resulted in ,mr batchmix, all the way from doncaster giving the best price (£140 cheaper than lafarge inc delivery over 20 miles)

they said they could send it in a small truck and maybe do two runs  as access is very,,very,, tight down a ten foot entry with a r/h bend partway down
which now measures 9 foot due to a leaning wall that no one dare go near  :o :o and a thick privet/hawthorne hedge and a tree.

so guess what turned up  ::) ::) a 6 wheeler

the driver was a ,diamond ,geezer,, after struggling at the first attemp he reversed all the way down and round
oldmetalhead, on here knows how tight it is  ;) ;)

we had a tremendus storm and high winds last night and i was so worried about the concrete getting spoilt i was up at 3am checking and making things safe,,
luckily we had the vital area sort of covered and the fence,, strategictly placed vehicles, and the old shortened garage kept 99.5% of the weather off

thank god  ::)

so by lunvh time today it was set enough to ,gently,, walk on
going to leave it a couple of days then organise the block work which there maybe a  chance of getting done between christmas and new years eve,,

block work started but stopped again,, ::) ::)

but the delivery truck bringing the sand ,,cement,,and 510 blocks couldnt get round where the six wheeler mixer truck had been so we /I had to ferry the materials round from the front of the house
with whatever was available ,  ;)

garage/workshop is progressing slowly but i,ll get ther, eventually ,temporey door/boarded up so secure and almost fully weather tight now

you could put a bell tower on it  call it a place of worship and not pay council tax
