Title: Who can explain this?
Post by: Manky Monkey on July 23, 2007, 12:17:25 PM
O.K, so what's going on here then?
This oddball Harley chop was at this weekend's Victory Wheelers show in Romsey.
What's the silver thingy hanging out the left hand side? Looks like an exterior clutch basket to me. But why? It's attached to the hand gearchange & there was a shaft out the back of it with a splined end like a car axle drive shaft, but it didn't appear to be connected to anything.
Just curious that's all.

Knew I'd get an informed answer!  :P
It looked very Dan Dare/Rocket Man ish, but got no idea why it's there.

Some sort of reverse?????

Yes Lunatic is right first type of siren fitted to the 45 model Harley, lots of them about the later Harleys had one fitted to the front wheel often come across these at Harley swap meets.

Ahh! Of course. Thought Loony was joking, but as soon as you mentioned front wheel fitting I remembered seeing one on a Servicar at the Ace Cafe trike meet a couple of years back. Must go & dig out the photo. So is the rod that appeared to be connected to the gearshift actually the on/off thingy? Should the shaft at the back be connected to the wheel in some way?

Ta daa!
Found it. Ace Cafe trike day, 2005.

Works on the same principle as a push bike dynamo exept the spindle comes in contact with the centre of the tyre much like the French Velo Solex  ped engine that goes down on the front wheel.

Ah!  That bit was what made me wonder if it was some kind of reverse!

So pulling the operating arm swings the whole unit round on it's mount so the rod contacts the tyre. Now I understand.

my mate had a cable operated one on his Harley, I remember the cable snapping on the way to the Kent show. Should have seen the car drivers panic ;D ;D ;D ;D

Ahh, the Kent Custom Bike Show. Saw my first trike there when it was still held at the transport cafe. Was it called the Halfway Cafe?

Spooky signature Jarrod!  :o
The guy with the blue chop was at the Romsey classic meet on Boxing Day. I gave him a card when I first met him last year & asked him to send in some pics for the Motors section, but never heard any more from him. I think it's in BSH this month isn't it? I like the hoodie worn over the top of his helmet! Wonder if he ever gets pulled for that?

That's Nannyogg's Southampton show, coming up again in April.
