Mild steel tubular, bought from Ebay. I'd looked at making my own then found someone was selling them. 160 quid -maybe. Can't remember. Baychimp's had it blasted & chrome plated, but I know the seller was going to start making stainless ones.

This guy's selling tuned mild steel ones for 175.

Ok guys and girls I'm back from our first proper ride out. There good news and bad news.
Sorry but no pictures yet  Embarrassed because of the bad news. Just getting comfortable with how it was riding when on an A road doing about 45mph my left leg suddenly feels wet! Look down and there is water and steam chuffing out from the radiator cap  Shocked got it to gooses house with a few more sperts out tge cap with a very wet leg then she wouldn't turn off. Thought it might be an air lock (I had some pipe off to fit switch) so bled it. Then found that the thermostat housing had a crack in it. Took gooses of his trike and his radiator cap fitted those. Still blowing water over my leg  Shocked Huh Angry the side of the trike and my jeans look like a plasterer has emptied his dirty bucket down them.
Not turning off we think my be down to  oil getting and staying to hot (was told that may be an issue with where I had placed it) so have moved that out of the ignition box and onto the frame at front of trike.it turned off after the ride home.will tidy it up later.
So anyone got any ideas why she might want to sometimes pretend to be a kettle?
The good news is apart from the above she runs like a dream. Handle bars are rock solid, I had no fear of letting go to change gear. She corners like shes on rails. Got a number of looks and waves and one kid in a soft top car was taking pictures  Smiley when I wasnt worrying about the water I was grinning Grin.
So shes back in the warehouse till I work out the problem is and fix it.

Hmm.
Different pressure rated radiator cap needed?
Take the thermostat out?
Put the radiator fan on continually or fit a manual over ride switch?
Lift the radiator higher or fit a header tank?

Sorry  things didn't go too well.
Usual reasons for overheating are, Fuel mix too lean, retarded ignition, poor airflow through the rad or poor coolant circulation.
I assume you hadn't over filled the radiator and the fan was working ok. The position of the coil shouldn't cause the problem of not turning off. If there is no electricity going to the coil, there will be no spark. It might have been running on caused by the overheating or an electrical problem.

Sounds like this is an ignition problem,
Engine running on is pre-ignition.
Check the timing.

cheers andy  Wink. thermostat is out, i think the cap is 7lb (will check tomorrow), fan switch i fitted worked ok ( come on and off on at 92 off at 84 i think). will have to look at rad hight.
it seemed intermittent, would squirt abit then be ok for a bit. not sure if it would it when i was doing around 45mph or if it just seemed that way because that was the speed i was doing most of the time.

fan seemed to work ok. over filled radiator, might have to look at that  Roll Eyes also adjusted some wires and the ignition barrel so might have fixed it that way. coils in a nice stainless clamp now so will see how it goes  Smiley

This might sound silly but, is the fan rotating in the right direction?

Bleed teh rad first. Start it up from cold with the rad cap off until the thermostat opens. The air trapped behind the stat will rise as the water gets hot and will exit in a large burp. Then top the rad back up leaving room for expansion. That's the mistake most people make on an open system. If it has a recovery tank you can fill it to the top.
