Title: SS Great Britain
Post by: cunningplan on May 10, 2009, 07:35:43 PM
Went to Bristol today to look over the SS Great Britain. First we went on a small sailing ship alongside (Only cost a donation) then we went to go see the big ship, was shocked at the price of 5p under £11 but when we found, we could go back as many times as we liked for the rest of the year, its not bad (For us anyway at about 1 hour to get there)
If you like this type of thing, its a great half day out, lots to see and we will be going back as we did not see it all.

I might be wrong but I think that you only get to go back as often as you like for the rest of the year if you signed up to gift aid, which is where you authorise the place you are visiting to claim back the VAT on your entrance fee, or something like that. But yeah it is an interesting place to visit? Is Bristol blue glass works still next to the ship? And was the smaller ship called The Mathew?

Not to sure, he just gave us all (7) a card each we had to sign in front of him and we will have to sign it every time we go back.
Yes the other ship was the Matthew, little wooden one, went across the Atlantic and back a few years ago.
As to the BBGWs, did not see it, but then again did not realy look, took a walk along the river after to the swing bridge.

Sounds like a nice day out Tony. Never really stopped in Bristol, just passed through enroute to other places. Maybe I should stop next time.  :)

It really is an eye-opener when you think that this ship was launched in 1843, it pre dates the telephone, jack the ripper, the american civil war and even the mass production of steel! I first saw it many years ago, like alot of people, forced to go as a school trip,at that time it was very much a rusting hull, i was amazed at its transformation into the attraction it is today. The huge 4 cylinder engine is a work of art, and is based on an idea developed by Brunels dad.

Brunel's Dad?! I love all that sort of human history. Really brings things to life when you hear the stories behind them.

It seems 3 people had a hand in the engine design,  (which resembles an inverted v twin, with 2 `pistons` each end of the crankshaft, running at approx 45 deg.), Thomas Guppy designed it with help from IKB, from an original idea from his dad.
Here`s IKB and me discussing his proposed suspension bridge  ;D
