Hi.I,me with the old school method as well. I used a grinder and a flap disc to get the right angles for my build around the headstock. The only difference is, I made a paper template of what the correct angle and cut out should be....then simply wrap it around the tube,mark and cut and shape it.

Start at the "hardest" end with the tube over length, to allow for cockups adjustments, and a short piece of scrap tube at the bench to marry up onto allowing you to perform many small grind / check cycles works for me.
