Museum entry fees apply

For those that appreciated ‘old’ vehicles being used, the irony is the calendar is pretty bear until we reach Sun 27 Jan, where we find both the Talmag and the VSCC Driving test at Brooklands on the same day – ho hum

Brooklands, the world’s first purpose built motor racing circuit, is located at Weybridge in Surrey.
Today, the bulk of area is built upon, but a Museum takes pride of place on the start/finish, and includes the main original Clubhouse, associated ‘sheds’ where pre-war race cars were built, and aircraft buildings, including the Stratospheric Chamber, an original re-built hangar along with a new hangar.

‘Live’ motoring events take part throughout the year, and on Sunday 27th Jan, it was the turn of the Vintage Sports Car Club   https://www.vscc.co.uk/   to have their competitive Driving Tests, where these pre-war cars tackle various autotest-style challenges against the clock, which means many of these historic vehicles are spinning wheels and loosing traction in order to save fractions of a second.
Mechanical sympathy can be evident by its absence!

The day was chilly along with a cold wind, but drivers and spectators, with hats, coats and gloves etc all appeared to be enjoying themselves.

Here are some piccies

A couple of the smaller cars on the old start/finish straight, with one of the site’s many air raid shelters in the background

Sunshine makes it look nice and warm............ it wasn't

Just imagine back in the day, pre-war cars doing something like 130mph on the banking!

The recently re-created results board.

In the early days, motor racing was run on similar lines to horse racing with racing colours, and a paddock to keep the cars.

The Test Hill, where the gradient gradually increases.

For early cars, in particular smaller models, this could prove to be a huge challenge.

Here’s an early Allard smoking the left tyre as the driver gives it the beans.
One of Allard’s traits was to have big engines. This model has a flat-head Ford V8 (along with Edlebrock heads and manifold!!)

Part of the Museum display – A supercharged 6 cylider MG (with double back wheels – the only way to put more rubber on the road, often seen in hillclimbs) alongside the infamous the track record holding Napier Railton.
The Railton features a 24 litre Napier Lion aero engine.

The car on the left was competing, whereas the one the right (I think) was there as a spectator’s car.

Left car has more than a passing resemblance to a ’32 model B Ford, but is in fact a Chyrsler, and rather nice it is too...........
