hi all, well back again nearly twelve months after starting the first project, starting this project with out purchasing the bike yet but can start making the rear end with out having that as i do know what bikes i have in mind and what i need to do to get the rear frame started to fit any of the ones i have in mind just waiting to drop on a low mileage bike at a reasonable price eg intruder,shadow, vn, magna etc and not forgeting the good old virago,...... all though not a custom bike i have not ruled out the xj but would have to change tank and seat and get it more cruiser style.

Ok going to use a reliant axle this one was courtesy of stumpy (thank you stumpy) its an A stamp axle 3.23/1 so today thought i would start with the axle by striping it down removing and checking the inners,then remove all brackets,clean the tubes back,remove hubs from inner shafts and clean back,will get the diff casting sand blasted when but back together

well took the diff housing to be sand blasted today ready for polishing, cleaned all iner diff housing and internals,then reasembled,need to order some calipper mounting plate,s next for the MM disc convertion,will be picking up tube for rear frame on monday

I've never seen the inside of a diff housing so clean! All the ones I've worked on have been black & full of crud!

Its going to be another virago picked it up today,California state import and it shows, this is one of the nicest viragos i have seen 1986 26000miles one owner in this country who as owned it for twelve months and done 20 miles on it  ;D

i,m relieved you got another bike,i say this cuz i was thinking of offering you my kawasaki eliminator zl1000 but i started it up yesterday and  took it out of the garage and now i,m glad i didn,t. ;D

This bike came from stoke Trev, it was originally imported by DK the new owner brought it from there about 12 months ago i went up there yesterday to fetch it, i had also been considering the eliminator as one of my options in my list of bikes to do  ;)

Got the bike in the work shop today took a few pics of the bike before i start striping the bits i will not be useing,think today is the first time this bike as seen rain, its got hazzards fitted as standard, cruies control sidewinder alarm,cruies foot pegs, and is the gold edition.

found a bit of time today to cut out and bend the two halves of the rear swing arm,just need to prep the ends up ready to be tacked together then hopefully tig weld up by Hornet6,going down the same line of frame as i did with the 750 virago with a few differences.

made up the bushes to screw in to the frame pivot point to protect the inner thread and to take the 16mm mounting bolt for the new swing arm used a couple of 22mm plummers pipe blanks and drilled them out to 16mm and screwed them in, spot on.

got the two halves of the frame tacked together and cleaned up ready to add the frame to axle mounting points

Receve 3/4" master cylinder today,work well with the MM disc convertion last project

receved inserts rose joints and swing arm pivot bolts

just need to slot the tube to weld the inserts in to it then will be able to mount the two halves of the frame (swing arm) ready for the next parts of the frame to be added

will need to make spacers up to go beetween rose joints and frame.

looking shweeeet kev hope your other half is well and home now and the puppy s**t aint too bad
i igot a load to do on mine been busy breakin in a new woman xxx but should be able to consentrate a bit
better now will catch up rightly soon me ol fruit keep up the good work

well need to get the mounting plates on to the rear frame for the back axle to bolt to using ubolts again this time using the two plates and ubolts from a reliant robin used to mount the springs to the axle,will then need to get the bike out of the shed bolt the frame on and square the frame and bike up before puting in the final brace across the frame and shock mounting points on

just ordered two of these wheels should match the front one a treat

I am waiting for you to get round to making your own front ends as well Zac ;)

I'm a big fan of leading link and trailing link front ends nabsim, but if the original front end works i probably would not change it especially on a cruiser type bike as the rake and trail are usually OK if the trike sits as near to its original length and ride height,but it would be nice to have ago at a nice wide glide leading link or trailing link front end.all the best Kev

 Think these will match the front one this time MM,£168 for the two £15 next day delivery  :)

got the bike out side and striped out the rear end,faced up the rear frame and fitted the frame to axle mounting plates both sides

next had to make the spacers to fit between the rose joints and pivot point on the bike frame used some 40mm diameter alloy bar cut to length then drilled centers out to 16mm

next decided to make the mounting points for the shocks,this time decided to run the mounting bar for the brackets underneath the frame then put two more tie bars between the bracket mounting bar and the tie bar at the rear of the frame

just need tomorrow to add the tabs for the bottom of the shocks put one more brace across the frame at the front and two more short tie bars from that to the shock mounting bar, think the frame will be finished then

faced the wheels up to the axle so i can square up the frame and get the ride hight to where i want it to be before welding the tabs on for the shocks

got some short mudguards that i may reshape a little

also sourced some more single seats the same as i fitted  to the xv 750 so will fit them to this to

got the springs mounted yesterday

its now free standing with the wieght on the springs decided to move it round to the lock up where i will now remove the rear again and take it back round to the work shop for finishing and prep for painting a long with the axle will also make up the mudguard brackets,still a few jobs to do yet

well with thoughts of sorting the paper work out on this and having another wait of over three months to get a dvla inspection as i did with the last one, decided to have a trip to my local office this morning armed with the paper work and pics and a covering letter, when i got there i ask to speak to martin who is the inspector at my local office unfortunately i was told he was on leave,so the young lady asked if she could help so i went on to explain why i was there and went thou the paper work and asked her if there was enough information with me or was there any thing else i could provide to save me a three month wait for a inspection like on the previous occasions, she then asked me to wait a few moment why she went off with the paper work to speak with her manager,when she returned she told me that her manager would authorise an inspection for me,the Young lady then said that she would give me a call with a date for a inspection this afternoon, true to her word she rang me to give me a inspection date for this Thursday unfortunately i had to turn this down as this was to quick even for me, so she then offered me one i could except for the 11th of October,well done that young lady..... never thought i would turn down and except an inspection apointment in the same day :)

some years ago, when myself and some friends were in the business of building chops and lowriders, we had a good relationship with our local inspector, they used to visit in those days. It nearly always took about 6 to 8 weeks for an appointment so me, thinking I was being clever, booked an appointment before we`d actually started building the bike. When Malcolm, the inspector, turned up TWO days later I made him a cuppa and then flew round the workshop piling wheels, engine, headstock (already machined), an old pair of handlebars and a pile of seamless tube, into a heap in the middle of the floor!!!!! Malcolm creased himself laughing amd handed me a piece of paper with the VIN on it which  I stamped onto the headstock there and then. He asked what it was gonna look like so I told him it was a Bay Area Lowrider and showed him a copy of Easyriders. "Ok" says Malcolm, "I`ll put your doc`s in the post this afternoon". I did like old Malcolm.   ;) ;) ;) ;)

My local guy wasn`t quite so helpful, but at least they came to you!
I did one conversion and arranged the inspection, 3 days later I sold the trike, a couple of weeks later I had a visit from the inspector asking to see it.
Needless to say I was a bit red faced, the inspector was ok with it, I think he just liked to get out the office  ;D

well done you it will be fine plenty of time to get it finished
so you wont be asking for martin again will you

have now prep-ed and sprayed rear frame, mounted handbrake leaver and master cylinder and bolted frame up to bike, next job prep and spray axle

axle sorted and back in place,now need to fit all brake parts back on,will be doing the disc convertion at a later date so will be putting the drums back on if i can remember how they go back together

started to make mudguard brackets up today,really hate this job think it shows in the fact i only managed to mount one all day

cheers steve, mudguards are from trikes for u, £26 a pair, i think i will be using the lights pictured below but still trying  to make my mind up

just like to say a big thank you to monkey member Al for sending me not one but two reliant brake adjusters can now get on and put the drum brakes together.thank you very much Al it is much appreciated............. what would we do with out our fellow monkeys.

have now sorted the drum brakes out,fitted brake pipes and bled the brakes but not clamped them to axle yet,....used an original reliant one piece hand brake cable and made two seperate cables for o/s and n/s, as i had cut all the brackets off the axle when i had it had to make some brackets up to acomadate the cables dint fancy welding direct to the axle so made some brackets and welded them to some ubolts then bolted them round the axle, so brakes are all done now

Trying to figure out a combination of lights on mine, ummm

I always have probs deciding on lights still haven't made my mind up on the tail and brake lights don't normally mount lights on the mudguards..... do like to leave me the option to remove the mudguards if wanted  :)

got weight certificate today weighed in at 300kg yet again,.......already for inspection tomorrow

well every thing was fine with the inspection and because it still had tax still on it as a bike martin the inspector  had it changed over there and then to tricycle and i will receve the log book back in a couple of weeks with it registered as a trike so will not have to have another trip in to Birmingham like i did last time......... not a great deal left to do now for mot just back lights and just waiting for the insert for the prop to be made so that can be welded up and fitted

kinda wish i had started a conversion one for my first project zakboy, seem to see quick results.. ground up builds seem long term even though i have plenty of room. outside builds must be a nightmare..

I have got an excuse though, I`ve been really rough for the past couple of weeks, could barely move at times. I`ve even missed three very important meetings because I was so bad. So there  ;D ;D ;D ;D

zakboy, what do you put on the plate where the axel sits when the u bolts go round.

i think now i have got a trike to use,once the xs850 is done i a may just do a reliant as there would be no rush to get it on the road its just the paper work and msva that puts me off custom builds , bolton convertion,s are ok and i can think of lots of advantage,s to boltons especially when done with adjustment  ;)

i weld the plates so they are just proud of the frame underneath so thay are actually touching the axle and the frame tube is just sitting above the axle tubes or near enough so that i can make and place a square of rubber underneath the mounting plate more or less rubber template of the mounting plates so just to lift the frame of the axle so the rubber on the mounting plates is the only contact with the axle just helps to cut down on any vibration you may other wise get though the frame,  i don't put any thing on the unbolts all though you could thread rubber tube over them and just cut it off where the treads are they then just go round the axle from underneath the threaded part then comes up though your holes in the plates and the nuts are then on top of your mounting plates

Took for a blast this morning, runs very straight , very positive on cornering really sticks to the road, loads of torque,dont like the handle bars so will replace with set of V,or drag bars  :)

could do to move at your pace, do you just use spray cans on your diffs and axles.. look mega clean. think i may paint a few bits as i go along. gives a sense of finish.

yes dobber i think cans are fine for axles frames etc, i think its all in the prepping to how well it turns out i use cans for every thing

hi shafty, I'm in two minds what to do next as a project...,but i am making a rear body to fit over the rear frame of the virago 1100 to give it a totally diffrent look....i take you are working on a project at the moment your self  :)

I started rebuilding my old 79 gs850 into a trike conversion a while ago now but just ran out of time (kids, work, etc..) and money, so its been sitting in the garage collecting dust for the last few months.

Reading your builds has given me a bit of a kick in the arse to get the spanners out and start again.
Its scary just how quickly you work.. slow down, put your feet up, its making the rest of us look bad. :)

Think the gs850 is a very good basis for a great trike,had one for a few years and loved it and would love another one,..all the best with the rest of your project would be nice to see some pics of your progress at some stage if poss  :)

I'm gonna be ordering some M16 rose joints tomorrow so will be blowing the dust off my tool kit (hacksaw, hammer, .. the usual precision tools) soon.
I asked about tube size cos if i can get standard threaded M16 inserts to fit snug inside the tube then that makes life a lot easier as i dont have to make any to fit. How best to weld them in place?

with the size tube i mentioned i used two m16 stud nuts brought from local hardwear store £1 each there a perfect fit and because there hexagon shape when you insert them in the tube and slot the tube to weld them in you can get a lot more weld in, if you use these when you order you rose joints make sure you get the ones with a 2mm pitch thread and not the 1.5 pitch thread  :)

hi AL, its funny you should ask that when i started the xv1100 back in September my priority was to get it together as a trike,DVLA inspected,registered with paper work correct and to put a few miles on it to make shore it ran straight no steering probs and it was a pleasure to ride and not hard work or teddies the plan on starting it was to get this done before the winter set in,and to be sure i had a trike that was ready for the road for next spring unlike the xv750 that DVLA kept me waiting 3 months for a inspection witch ment i missed out on the spring this year so to get where i wanted be with the 1100 i took a few short cuts so did not quiet get the look i wanted,so today i have removed the rear end and now plan to get the look i want, so will be changing the mudguards, come up with some new mudguard brackets,will be making a new light panel for the rear and to give it a kind of moulded look from the rear,change all the lights add a few designer gussets, repaint the rear frame and will be doing a suttle air brush job on tank,and panles mudguards etc and will also try and get the xs finished,so have now got the rear end in the warm to start working on it,all the best kev

will also be adding a rack,im happy with the length of the wheel base but it needs somthing to make its profile look a little longer

Made a start on fabricating a diff cover come light and numberplate panel,to give the rear end a bit better look, just a few more bits to add then need to prep with a bit of p38 and will be ready for paint, should then blend in with the frame.... brought some more mudguards off ebay they were described as being 8 1/2 wide witch would have been just right when they arrived they were 13 inch's wide so a little to wide unless i take some out the middle

cheers shafty,nothing wrong with the old ones just that i would need to get some more to fit on the xs project and make more brackets so if i have to do that i would rather up grade so to speak the ones on the virago and throw  the old ones on the xs for now

hi Rod.there is a bit to do yet if your on about the small shelf directly below the number plate it will be to take the number plate lights but there is a bent strip that is to go around that to give the whole thing a bit more dimension the bigger panel with the curve will be where the exhausts will come though.......if that makes any sense

Thats one of the reasons I painted instead of powder coated my frame,cos I knew I would be adding bits and changing stuff!

your spot on there rod i lose count of the times i keep re painting becuse of changing things but its more convenient than keep powder coating,on the XS I'm trying to get every thing right so hopfuly i will only need to paint it once

rear panel now preped and sprayed,just the rest of the frame to respray now..... decided will not be going with the big mudguards now

You should be all right dobber for MSVA as long as they are no more than 400mm  in from the outer edge of the trike and have a minimum hieght of 250mm  :)

with the subject of what number plate to use (car or bike) on a trike poping up recently,  looked for more info and came across this at a dvla site so have now took the car plate off and replaced it with a bike plate         MOTORCYCLES AND TRICYCLES
l Motorcycles and tricycles registered after 1.9.2001 must only display a number plate at the rear of the vehicle.
l Motorcycles and tricycles registered before 1.9.2001 can display a number plate at the front but are not required to.
l Tricycles derived from four wheeled bodies i.e. saloon cars must meet the normal requirements for numbers plates. Whereas tricycles derived from motorcycles must meet the requirements for motorcycles.

not sure which i prefer zakboy. guess you need to see it in the flesh as it were to decide. looks good either way tho.

well i prefer the car plate dobber and added a part to that rear panel specially for a car plate but dvla are saying that a bike derived trike as to carry a bike type plate and a single line number is not leagal

hmmmm...it doesnt mention trikes derived from 3 wheeled vehicles!Think I'll go with a bike plate and chance it!

put a car one on mine to try it. also think it looks better than a square one. getting a 8mm rod  shaped round the plate for a mount hopefully thrown in as a sweetner with some equipment im having made for work.

Personally I prefer the car plate :) But why don't you get it through the registration process with the bike plate then swap it back (keep the bike one for Mot's). I cant see the average bobbie being bothered as long as its readable by their 'big brother' gagetry in their patrol cars ;)

hi Simon, that's actually a good idea,and i think your right about old bill as long as its clearly readable, i think if the subject of witch plate to use had not come up recently i would not of given it a second thought and just gone with the car plate  ;)

i just brought some carbon vinyl wrap its mainly used for customising cars, thought i would buy some and try it, its quiet good stuff and very cheep i think with a bit of practise applying it i could probably do the mudguards to match.... beats paint

So it's a vinyl imitation carbon? Self adhesive? Do you heat it with a hair dryer or something to fit the shapes? Just curious.

yes MM its not the real carbon mating, if you use an air dryer with heat you can manipulate around curves and it is self adhesive  i brought a cheep one to try it.. its better than i thought it would be.

hi skiprat yes you will be talking about the real carbon expensive stuff, this is the vinyl wrap an imitation carbon but it s not bad stuff it reflects the light just like the real stuff, it cost me about £2 to do that back panel  :)

hi zakboy, looking good as per,   theres a lot of the vinyl wrapping going off in my game with the fast food trailers, be overtaking the painting soon..  the vinyls way more sophisticated now.

hi Dobber,cheers mate yes vinyl as come on leaps and bounds but the application is a lot essayer to, i know this will last longer than the spray paint i put on the panel in the first place but it,s easy to get off if need be and it comes in most colors  :)

the 3M DI-NOC stuff is the best

covered the mudguards with this wrap........ bit more tricky but got there in the end with it

If that's as good in the flesh as it looks in the photo, I'm seriously impressed!

I thinkwith this cheep wrap MM the prob is air bubbles using on curves,but i found that using a fine needle to stick in the bubble after i got it the best i could, just Putin the air dryer over it with heat they disappeared,the other wrap you can get is more expensive but not that much more,claims to be air bubble free something to do with the way the adhesive as been put on the back, another good point about these wraps is the carbon look is not printed on the vinyl its embossed witch gives it a better quality look and feel than printed vinyl

you can see the air bubbles in this pic you get with this cheep wrap its hard to avoid them on curved surffeces but you can get them out sticking a needle in the air bubble rub it over and it disappears

the di noc 3m stuff is a bit thicker and you can stretch it well, and move it about a few times to get it right, theres very little bubbles with it, u tube it and see

Looks good Zak.Did you trim it off level with the edges ,or roll it round? Do you think it will be weather proof enough not to lift on the edges?

some of its trimmed and  some wrapped round Rod, im playing around with this stuff at the moment to see how good it is, its only the cheep stuff I'm using to try it, they claim its weather proof but I'm going to put the jet wash on it tomorrow to see if i can shift it i don't think it will, they claim its not effected by uv ray from the sun eather and dont fade

Got both mudguards covered now and back on........ think that finishes the back end now

do prefer the car plate merv, but its the bike plate thats the leagle one acording to dvla and the car plate is not, if i take the car plate off then it leaves a blank plate on the back panel that will look odd with nothing on it so i need to look at perhaps a novelty plate or somthing to go on there  :)

if it was me i,d leave the car plate on,99% of the plod wouldn,t know,but thats me living on the edge,and i fell out of bed this morning. :(

must be something trick you can put where the bike plate is, car plate does look better after studying it.  law wont bother you with car plate, wont even know the law.   vosa may be another thing but think ther more interested in putting folk out of business than doing there job right..

You could get a laser cut plaque made up with Manky Monkey Motors or summat on it. A bit like the Lowrider club plaques? Or maybe a piece of stainless with rounded corners,just with large holes about 1" diam drilled in lines across it

If you like the carbon fibre look are you aware you can buy the woven carbon cloth from most glass fibre supplier? Just use clear resin and your are away

hi Nabsim,did watch a video on utube recently of some one using the carbon fiber cloth with the resin it look great when finished but it reminds me of using the glass fiber matting and resin witch when ever i use it i get it every where messy job, think the carbon cloth is quiet expensive so i believe, i think for the small amount i did on the trike the vinyl wrap was fine and it dose look like the real thing and will probably be better wearing than paint but i think with this kind of thing its probably best not to over do how much you use on a project so as not to make the overall finish look tacky bit like chequer plate iv seen trikes covered in this and i just hate it but a bit is OK

Not having much look finding chrome side panels and mudguard's for the virago,so have decided to have the tank and mudguard powder coated in one of the candy colours and side panels sprayed..... found this company prices seem reasonable to me...... has any one ever used them and are they as good as they sound http://www.triple-s.co.uk/index.htm

i would image it would dobber, but because the side panels are in the center on each side of the trike if it was a slightly diffrent shade i think i could live with that

yes that's the mot test station in rugeley lm lucky only have to go about 3miles and the testers a sound guy  :) but hope fully will be riding round the lakes early may, will trailer it up there and ride round when i get there would never be able to ride that far with the old hip the way it is at the moment, but just got an appointment with the specialist on the 5the of march and hope fully will start the ball rolling for a new hip  :)

Need my new hip before i could ride that far, but i suppose i could put it on the trail and ride it the last mile or so......... by the way whats the date of the festival I'm in the lakes from the 30 of April till 4Th of may

Sunday the 13th of May -it's just an afternoon thing really but attracts around 900 vehicles.

It is my aim this summer just to ride and get to as many places as i can,so will cetainly put it in my diary as one of the event to try to get to.

hi nabsim,well I'm off on Monday to see the specialist with a list of questions i will be wanting to ask including how long I'm likely to be out of action for, Alan  (bitzman) who came down for a visit last year who at the time had just recently had his own hip done and has guided me on what i can expect and have Alan to thank for wanting to pushing my self to take steps to actually getting something done about my own hip, one of the things that Alan pointed out to me was the thing you have to be careful about when first receiving a new hip is not to over do things or the hip can have a tendency to pop out its socket,my bigest fear is I'm sure i will be able to tell you what this feels like as i know i cant keep still for five minutes and am more than likely to brake all the rules the doctors tell me i (just cant help myself). anyway hows the roads around derby looking we are planing to be blazing the trail round there May bank Holiday so if your out and about and you see a triker with one leg over his shoulder that will be me having popped me hip  ;D

You are  winter has been a lot worse on my hips, consultant did say a couple of years ago if I hadn't lost a leg I would be in a wheelchair after seeing the x-rays but I never believed him as I hadn't had any problems. Till this winter. Thing that's putting me off is how long it takes before at least as good as before you have it done. Think I will be a bit buggered til I can get about again okay. Plus we don't get sick pay so will need to put it off as long as possible as still have 49 more mortgage payments.

Not bad enough to interfere with work though just working outside on the trike. Or in the shed. Never mind warmer weather shouldn't be that many weeks off now :)

If you don't mind will you let me know how long they reckon it should take? Will have a word myself when I am at the limb centre next time but that is summer I think and if it's cold weather causing it I may well forget all about it :)

Hi Nabsim as Zak said i had mine done about 2 years now best thing iv done putting up with the pain for a long time had the op friday afternoon had me out of bed saterday morning NO PAIN instant relief rehab about 4 days in hospital then on 2 walking sticks for about 2 weeks then 1 stick for a week then no sticks gentley does it for a while back on bike in 6 weeks just be carefull putting leg over saddle (depends which way you get on bike it was my right hip and thats the leg iv always thrown over the saddle (haha) but im brill now so i say go for it buddy

Alan as given you the best advice there Nabsim,its not such a long draw proses as we think,  please take his advise as i have,I'm lucky in a way its just one of my hips and its the left so to get my right leg over the saddle is not going to be such a prob...........and just think how much more you will be able to do that you are not able to do at the moment.... pain free ......will pm you to keep you posted on my own progress.Zak

Wow that's a lot quicker than I thought it would be, thanks Bitzman and Zac. Not sure it is bad enough yet for them to do it. Last they said was they would wait until it was unbearable and it isn't that by any means. will speak to consultant at limb centre definitely and see what he reckons :)

I have noticed lately that driving car more than a hundred miles (ish) has started hurting my hip due to twisting in the seat to get across to the throttle. Funnily enough, when I got the outfit I was riding it most of the day and it didn't bother me at all. Did you get hip problems on the other bikes/trikes Zac?

Hi Nabsim, when i go out on the trike only if its a few miles i suffer for it later, pushing the clutch in in the van can be a prob if i travel to far just be glad to get it sorted now. :)

I make no secret of the fact that I dont think swingarm trikes are idealand really think that they shouldnt be exempt from MSVA, too many are death traps are lilkely to cause a huge problem, however that doesnt include yours, smart tidy and well executed

Im seriously thinking of building my own swingarm for a trike I have to rebuild, its simpler than hardtailing it as its already setup with a swinger

what sort of miles have you put on one of your trikes with the rod end/rosejoint pivot method, do you knock them out a bit quick, thus getting any play or noise? or do they last

your tube method is far superior to the ones I have seen already in my time, the box section ones that are welded together like jigsaws, they only ever as good as the weakest weld, of which there are usually plenty LOL

 

I too was wondering about the life of those rose joints.

rose joints  ::) they variry a lot in quality but the more expensive ones are almost indestructable you can get them in a steels and materials ,, and toughened ,, and with liners ,,grease nipple,s,, etc and even with rubber dust covers /boots
try looking at  Mc GILL MOTORSPORTS..
if they will hold the axle in a v8 stock car  then they gotta be tough,,

alot of pro builders even use them for steering joints  track rod ends and the like

I totally agree with the strength and capability of them, but what Im wondering about is the life of them in the real world, not used for an hour or so on a smooth track, then taken off and replaced as per I imagine big track cars are

I built an IRS back end with good quality ones years ago, but after maybe 1500 miles there was a tiny bit of chatter and buzz from them,

I use McGill for other parts, will have a look and see what they got and have a serious think.

For the virago will be doing a diffrent swingarm this time purely to be able to get round the prob of not being able to keep with the original virago exhaust weather..... i stick to this or revert back to origanal swingarm as on the others or not i dont know yet....... i will see how this one goes first anyways have cut some of the new swingarm out ready

Just coming back to skiprats comments about rose joints and boltons don't think i can fully give you the answers hear right now skiprat about my own theory on trikes, any one who builds trikes is going to have there own ideas about what they think is there own personal view on the best way of going about it, first you have to make a choice on what you want to get out of a trike, weather your just building for just looks or if you building for  trackability and safety (and if you can get a good looking trike its a bonus) personally i want to be able to have a trike that is a pleasure to ride (as far as riding trikes go) i  personaly get what i want from boltons it as nothing to do with how quike i can do them or msva, at the momment boltons dont requre it (i dont make the rules) i could do custom frames as good as the next man but in short i dont need to (plus it would take me 3 hours 47 mins longer than a bolton  ;D) every one to his own, i have every conffidence in high grade rose joints and boltons if done with some thought, if i was not conffident in the way i pesonaly do things i would not do it (and im a wise old git) NEXT Q PLEASE  :)

I like the calculated make thing in advance approach you have, mainly as its how I work :)

I will now look at pulling my current trike project apart to find out what size swingarm bolt I have/can fit and look for a way to start doing a rosejointed front and build a whole new backend for it

well vmax1200 as brought a xs750 so will all so be doing that along side the xv1100, so cut most of the frame out for that going with the same design as used on the las project

added a bit more an tacked up what will be the two halves of the swingarm

then added the rear brace and welded in the threaded inserts for the rose joints

all so started putting my own swingarm together

yes its very steep Merv but the only B stamp axles on ebay when i was looking were £275 and £250 i was very reluctant to pay £230 but i definitely wanted a B stamp this time so it was a case of having to pay the price  :)

i went out with a freind sunday who has a reliant trike with a b stamp, mine has a stamp, he could stay in 2nd when i had to go to 3rd, and had alot more accelaration because of this, i cant go over 3000rpm as im running in but even round town he could potter round without gear changes, i know there expensive £250+ seems the normal going price,but if you can find and afford one its a well worth while investment i think ;)

yes i agree Bandit for £230 it will be a good investment it will suit the bike engine a little better than than the A stamp but could have lived with the an A stamp if the B stamp had not been so readily available on this occasion   :)

can you swap the guts?

yes you can swap the cuts chewie, but the guts on there own are a bit difficult to find  :) at the moment vmax1200 as got a reliant kitten axle witch is 3.54 ratio (not the ideal ratio for a bike trike) but he is hopeing eventually to get the guts out of an A stamp axle to fit in, for the mean time we will put big wheels on it and see how it goes

there was a b stamp on ebay a few weeks ago it had had the ends cut of the axel tubes and half shafts so was £80 bin, i didnt realise you cud just swap the internals or id have it sat here now >:(,

I contacted rhino trikes and he supplied me a diff for 50 quid he has the van version as well various others in a shed maybe worth contacting him..

have you got a number steve?? did you get the diff minus shafts and tubes?? :)

if hes triking a Vmax then 3.55 is fine, fitted with 17 or 18 " alloys to get tyre height to the same as the bike original rear tyre it will be ok, can even afford to go slightly smaller

Vmax final drive is 3.667

yes an XS750 will be a bit of a pain on that ratio

XS final is 2.909 so the 3.23 ratio would be better

ay up kev,i,ve got a few xs750 bits,tank,seat  and a few other bits and bobs if vmax needs em off an old P reg,

best ratio is 2.78 B stamp vmax1200's must be off the 750 kitten van witch is 3.54 no stamp on the axle just the number so split the diff and counted the teeth on the crown wheel and on the pinion and divided

I've got a mate called tony from Telford too! Retro900 lives in Aquaduct & rides a black 883 Sportster.

ordered some new wheels and tyres for the xv today chose the same ones i had on the last one they wont be hear till monday,so today fetched vmax1200 xs round from the garage to get started on that, vmax picked a pair of aloys and tyres up from the local scrap yard

removed the rear wheel and swingarm and faced the new swingarm up to the bike to get it level before puting in the front brace

once leveld up tacked in the front brace

to mount the springs bent two pices of tube that will be welded one each sibe between the front and rear braces will weld in some tabs in the bends where the springs will sit

will get the springs mounted tomorrow....this time around drilled out the origanal swingarm pivot bolts to 16mm to  screw back in to the frame at the pivot point to protect the thread in the frame and to take the mounting bolts for the pivot point of the frame

faced up a couple of mudguards

god is that all youve done.....................

not a lot done yesterday rained all day so early start this morning, tacked in the two bars for the spring mounting points and tacked in the tabs, then was able to take it off its center stand,will trailer it round the garage now and take the frame back off for finishing.

yes the bike frame and swingarm pivot with the axle but the swing arm dose not move closer to the diff  :)

no it wont hit the mudguard, and no you dont need a mudguard in the middle you can leave it there or remove it.

well with the xs round the garage awaiting the next stage,it was time to bring the xv round to strip out the wheel and swingarm and a few other bits that wont be needed

faced up the swingarm pretty much the same swingarm as the xs but just diffrent in the way it as been put together was meant for another bike but thought i would use it hear, the extra tube sticking out the back was to form part of a rack come nudge bar, but may cut it off on this............ will see if i can make use of it or not  when the wheels are on

slow down zak you'll be finished before i can get over a nick some ideas ;D :D :D

well new wheels and tyres sould arive tomorow,can then get the front brace across the swingarm in place,so to day had to make the spacers up that go between the frame and the rose joint at the pivot point

because the frame needs to be off set on the xv the spacers needed to be of diffrent thickness used 50mm aluminum bar and cut each spacer to length

three days later  ::)

then drilled out centers to 16mm

then faced up to frame

also made up the shocker mounting points

excuse me for being thick zak, how do the rose joints fix into the old swing arm mounting point??

well Bandit as you will know the origanal swingarm would have fitted on the inside of the pivot points of the frame and would pivot on two threaded bolts that screwed in to two thread points on the frame,i do my swingarms so they pivot on the outside of the frame, once the original swingarm and pivot bolts are removed i make a threaded bush that then screws in to the each pivot points on the frame the center of the bush is drilled out to 16mm to take the bolts that will hold the newswingarm at the pivot point the new swingarm then has a threaded insert welded in two each of the main rails of the swingarm the rose joints then in turn screw in to the insert in the main rails the 16mnm bolt then goes though the rose joint though the spacer and threaded bush that was screwed into the pivot points on the frame then a nut is put on the bolts on the inside of the frame then tightned up  :)

new wheels and tyres arived.....seen them some where before..... yes same as last time

fitted them on so i could take it off its center stand and see how it sits on its springs,.............. bit bear bones at the moment

OAB, shaft drive bikes have a stud each side to screw into the swing arm rather than a through bolt you can get in chain drive bikes (or could back in the day I had solo bikes). Is that what you meant?

yeah nabs that more like what i was trying to ask, wondered how they actually fixed the swing arm to the frame if the frame was threaded etc, i supose it erelavant anyway as my old matchless is sure to have a totally different set up, hey zak would yo mind and pm me the wheel cost size and where from id kinda like somthing 15" like that style on me reliant trike these 16" with 45s arnt tnhe best option round my lanes :o

also got both hand brake leaver brackets made up one for the xv and one for the xs witch has now been welded on the xs swingarm will now get a final clean up then will be ready for paint

F/ME i turn me back for 10 mins and flash built another one /two trikes think you need a few bits amputating to slow you down a bit lol

vmax1200 swingarm for the xs is now finished  primed and top coated

turned down some aluminum for the spacers for the xs frame and drilled out the centers to 16mm

so the xs frame is now all ready to be fitted back on to the bike,......been puting the final touches to the xv frame to made up the bracket to take the rear brake master cylinder

then welded into place on the frame

also made up the insert for the prop

made a start on the diff cover come light panel for the xv today.

Changes the look completely doesn't it. Like that.

Id've thought the inspectors would want you to secure it to a mounting tab of some sort.

Are you keeping the rear guard on the XS? One of the bits that give the lie to it being a converted bike. In my humble opinion it'd look better with just the red tailpiece.

It is a convert bike MM theres no escaping that and im not trying to get away from that, some bikers who become trikers because riding a bike becomes difficult still prefer the look of a bike to a trike so prefer to keep all the bike bits, may be hard to under stand, but i dont under stand a lot of why other folk build there trikes the way they do and thats why we each build the way we do  :)

I'm glad I asked that, I would have made a nice tab, bolted it on, then ridden it, only to find I had to mangle something to set it up right. Good idea :)

extended the wiring looms on the XS and fitted higher bigger bars.......it needed them

I Know I've propbably asked this before, but....  Does using the rose joints where you connect to the bike provide much movement ie does the rear suspension work?  I'm asking because the swinging arm on my ural frame fixes to the back of the bike with a sort of 'T' connection.  If I get achance I'll photograph it tonight and post the pics.  The reason I'm asking is if I can use the rear suspension on the bike rather than hardtailing it it might be a bit more rideable

hi jevi, the suspension will work perfectly with the rose joints, they are designed to move freely no mater how tight the mounting bolt that goes though the center is. ;)

Rose joints...... Im always cautious about them, do they not "sway" side to side when fitted to swingarm ???

 I can under stand why folk would think that the swing arm would kind of articulate Pete, but using them in this application they don't they stay straight

I tend to favour your view of Rose joints in this situation Pete,and because of the very limited amount of angular movement at the pivot point, I prefer to use "Metalastic" or similar, bushes,Transit void bushes being a usefull and available size,the rest of the unit is pretty standard fare,and fine, Morrag

I'm sorry i must have miss under stood Pete's concerns i thought his concerns with rose joints was to much movement at the swingarm, I'm sure void bushes are used but there not for me they do have disadvantages used in there normal application so it would personally leave me to pause for concern to using them my self, most void bushes i have come across don't appear to have a bigger center hole of more than 12mm...12mm bolt at the main mounting point of the swingarm ??? mm i don't know, again not for me i don't think i would be happy to risk my a** on 12mm.

been into dvla this morning with paper work for the xv, got to go back at 2.20 for inspection...very quick

blinkin heck,thats quick zakboy,and on the subject of rose joints,i use them and can,t fault them,no unwanted movement and hard wearing,just my personal opinion.

rose joints have been used in heavy industry for years, getting far more abuse than you will give em, good things, and can be bought in sizes from a few mm to over 100 mm holes

I have no problem with rose joints as such......
but imagine one bolted to a clockface (instead of the hands),
stand in front of clock and you can rotate the joint around the 360deg, but I'm sure it can also be pulled towards you and pushed away from you. Or am I wrong??

yes you are right Pete, but when you use them as i have for my swingarm one at the end of each main rails because the other end of each rail is bolted solid to the axle and there are two brace bars across the swing arm one front and one rear joining them together, then with the bolts though the rose joints at the pivot come mounting points tightend up they don't move from side to side...... trust me they don't do what you first think and imagine they will do, i also put a locking nut on to stop any slight camber not that a bit of camber dose any arm...... even if you put misalignment spacer beetween the rose joints witch are designed to make rose joints turn at a bigger angle they will still stay straight and not move  :)

well thats the inspection done and dusted and and the vx is now legal.... its  not even finished yet i was told by the dvla inspecter and two other members of dvla staff while at dvla today that all local dvla local offices will be closed by.... two of the staff said march 2013 and the inspecter said the cut of date is december 2013

Not meant as a criticism in any way Zac, as the standard of your engineering appears first class, and is to be applauded, however "Metalastic" bushes do work equally as well in this particular application, particularly as as extremes of temperature etc. are generally not the case. I have used this type of bush successfully over many rears, and provided that the associated engineering is sound, then no probs. will ensue, as Lotus 7, Spitfire, etc. owners will I am sure confirm. At the upper limits of performance engineering, then maybe there is a case for alternative pivots, even possibly Bronze bushes pivot pins, but its more a case of "more than one way of skinning a cat!" so as to speak! oops not seriously all you animal lovers, honest!!..........whatever.......Morrag

Honest Morrag i never for one momment thought you ment any criticim, and im sure that void bushes can be used with out any  probs what so ever,  before i use any kind of item for a application i do my home work on each thing i may think i may beable to use and look at the negs a poses of each item i then reject items based on the poses and negs with out trying some items, but i only qoute why i would not use somthing my self, and would never say that somthing will not work



but dont go to the north pole with them, or drive through an oil or diesel slick on the M6   ;D

Ok started getting things fitted on the xv today, fitted hard panniers drilled out holes for rear lights and front marker lights on the diff cover before carbon wrapping it and bolting it in place will be looking at making mudguard brackets up tomorrow

i thick the Sideways movement on the roses it stopped by virtue of the shape and design of the rear.
the roses wont move laterraly as the fixed triangulation at the rear opposes them.
they also self align!

i think it looks better with the covered diff zak, gives it more of a proffesinal finish not the home built garden shed look. your a bit handy with the 3m see youve done the rear mud gaurd too. looking good mate ;)

Ok ta .. I spent hours spraying mine suppose I could of just used than wrap stuff I'm thinking I could use that stuff as stone protection inside the mudguard.. Ummm

i may be spraying mine yet Steve, there bigger than the normal size guards i use... so will be more difficult to wrap but i may have a go.

think what vmax1200 is referring to he has a low voltage reading at the indicator wires not enough to even light them up never mind flash, electrics are not my strong point...but i would think it may be a bad earth....... CHARGE the battery and check the earth conections

yeah id have thought the same its usually indicated by the dim ness, brake lights go the same and somtimes flash with indicators if the earth is s**te(had this on my first ever dimond white capri she was a beaut) solved by putting a new earth on the pannel to boot floor.

We have sorted out the clutch on the magna,not difficult but expensive cos need new master and slave cylinders to get it going,

Took the xv for a short spin yesterday only got it up to second gear and have to admit it felt  slightly  twitchy on the front end..... it was slight so took it up the road three times at the moment the xv has aftermarket forward controls witch are very forward and not what I'm use to I'm having to stretch causing me to have to shift my body weight  slightly to change gear its at this point when changing gear it twitches I'm putting it down to the bend at the front of the swingarm witch i put in for the first time to try to clear the xv exhaust system,because of the bend the rose joints are allowing the frame to over lean,they really need to be parallel with the outer main rails of the frame as in my original design to reduce that movement, i did have my doubt about this when the trike was stood still when moving the bars from side to side and watching the back wheels they were not as positive to follow the front round as with the original frames iv made, also when rocking the frame of the bike from side to side it was not as solid, all so i have not sat the back end down quite as much as usual need the weight of the engine leaning slightly towards the back and not the front end...... got this one wrong I'm afraid...... lesson learned if you have something that works dont change it.....ansewer i was prepaired for any probs because of the change to this frame so will now be fitting my original design frame  :)

Well, Zak,unless you try these thing's you never know, you now have learnt something new that you wont do the same again,which is better than always thinking what if.Still, with you at the helm it will still turn out right

As said mate, if you don't try new ideas, you don't move forward. Not a failure though, just more useful design info.
So, back on the road by tomorrow then?  :D

ok have stripped off this frame, cut a cupple of original  out the other day so set about puting one togeather

had to make up some axle mounting brackets

welded up the two halves of the frame and bolted them in place,need to get the panniers back on before i can put the rear brace across to make sure it clears them, do not want to have to refit them again in a diffrent position and have to make new brackets.

well finally managed to get my other swingarm fitted to the xv, decided to make the mudguard brackets part of the swingarm on this one....... lost a bit of enthusiasm for this one for some reason

Hi bandit, i think haveing to do another swing arm for it iv got a little burnt out with it i would like to just get on and ride it now... but theres not a lot left to do 

well got back to the xv after giving it a break for a few days,tried to carbon wrap the mudguards but they were just to big to get an acceptable job on them  :'( so decided to paint

had to mess about with the rear cover to make it fit this frame and had to re carbon wrap it again

very tidy zakboy.

I'm not a fan of bike conversion trikes,


But that's nice,very professional.

well need to get the xv wraped up this week got me date for me long awaited hip op the 30th of august just need to get all the lights wired up and hopefuly i may get a ride on it before the op wont be able to do a lot for six weeks or so after, it will send me crazzy  :'(

got to do a bit on the xs today covered the rear diff cover, and fitted it in place just needs the saddle bags on now and lights wiring up

also decided becuse of the prob fitting the original exshausr system on the xv thought i would buy a meter of 45mm s/s exshaust tube and some HD baffles and make me some drag pipes

cut the tube in to the lenth of each pipe and cut the ends at 45 degrees

drilled holes and bolted in the baffles

added the link pipes a polish up and they will be ready to fit

are tail pipes like that legal kev as id like to do similar for my trike just so it looks more in keeping with the old school chopper look. well at least thats what i visioned when i started?? would like to move the number plate to the centre and have a slash/baloney cut exhaust each side under the rear lights ;) might try with out baffles on the reliant engine

well they dont have to be stamped on a trike for mot Bandit, i supose its down to the tester at the time if he thinks there to loud or ok, i will try them as they are to see how loud they are with just the baffles undressed... if they are to loud i will just keep adding baffle packing untill the tone is right

got a couple of pics of the xv out in the open today needs a new front mudguard but gave it a bit of a blast and it run straight and true......very pleased

also gave the xs a short blast.... that to runs true and straight think its a relief once that first blast is out the way and things feel right

Is there a decibel limit for trikes in the MSVA test? It was 101 db for my truck when we put it through the SVA.

yes MM there is db test in the msva for trikes i think its about 98 db,the pipes i made up are surprisingly not to loud don't like them to loud i like a nice deep tone not quite got the tone i would like but i will play about with some baffle packing

Good luck with the hip op, Zak. Ive had both mine done and the lack of pain, after recovery from op, was such a relief. If I had a 3rd leg, that had a hip joint, I wouldn't hesitate to get it done :) Trikes looking really good  :)

Hi pete,thank you for the good wishes, I'm lucky iv only had to suffer the one bad hip its good to hear  that there is relief after the opp from others that have had it done  :)

Id lost about 45mm in leg length before they decided to replace my first one, the result was that I now have a full metal  ball and socket. My second one was replaced before too much damage was done and is a "birmingham" resurfacing joint. It was dam painfull directly after the operations but the morphine kept in in check, mostly. But as I say I wouldnt hesitate to have it done again if I had too. Good luck 8)

Hope the operation goes ok for you,and....with all the good trikes your turning out, are you still building them in your shed? I only ask as its pretty amazing cuz all your trikes are,in my opinion,professionally put together.

glad it all went ok kev hope your back up n running again soon... i had bone taken from my hip to fuse my wrist with as my scaphoid is still in tenbry wells somwhere :P  they expected me to get back on my feet after a good sleep and go home, it took me the best part of an hour to get from the hospital bed every time i moved it felt like i was being repeatedly stabbed with a knife, in all a painfull one. after 7 opps already and the longest being 13hours they wonder why i dont really want to go back again. its even made me scared of the dentist, im f**king sick of being stabbed all over :(

hi Pete,yes mate your right it hurts a bit :D i was determent when i went in that i wanted to have a full anaesthetic i dint want to feel them puling me bones about but the anesthetist ( a yank) convinced me to have the needle in the spine what a weared sensation it was when i came round ther was like a nowhere land between me waist and me feet strange....think the worse thing is havin to wear them stockings for deep vain,i dont mind wearing stockings at the week ends.... but they had to go will make sure i keep moving and i have  them injections you have to put in your stomach so should be OK yes am having to sleep on me back at the moment,it was great to be home and get some sleep last night. cheers mate

i also had the needle in spine to block pain of operation but it was weird being able to hear the electric saw when they sawed off the hip ball and the knocking of the hammer when they drove the joint into my leg bone :o :o

They have penciled me in for a replacement shoulder,Probably going to need two,
really worried about having this done.

mum had her shoulder done not long back and its turned out fine and she,s in her seventy,s  she fell and shattered hers and we all thought they wouldnt be able to do much for her at her age but it suprised us when they replaced the complete shoulder joint ,i reckon she,s got 40% more use than she,s had for years..

I have pretty good movement,but if i use a saw or file or paint roller shortly afterwards I'm in agony,
And of course I'm nearly 60 and they tell me I'm to young to have it done. ???

well that's surprised me iv never heard of a replacement shoulder is this something again where they replaces the joint with an artificial one or resurface the joints

they replaced mums as it was shattered beyond repair ,, i,d never heard of a replacement before ,

That's what worries me.

if shoulder replacements are as sucssesful as hip replacements it has to be a good thing

It never bothers me if they say I need something doing but I am just too squeamish to be concious. I always compare body to vehicles, if something is knackered you would get it swapped out so why worry about an odd leg, or shoulder, or hip etc.

What I find really amazing is the recovery times now compared to what they were. When I lost my leg in 78 they brought me back from IOM to the Devonshire hospital in Buxton. At the time that was renowned as being one of the best places for hip replacements (as well as head injuries but not replacement heads Trev :) ) People were coming in and going while I was stuck in there, with knees they attacked the patient the day after trying to get movement but they were in hospital for a good 2 weeks. With hip I dont think anyone was out in under 3 weeks and then they had a job to move.

I know the technology and materials will have improved as well but its the recovery time difference that amazes me :)

not quiet running yet Nabsim but have been out side today helping to put vmax1200 hazard warning kit on the xs....... the biggest danger when your first recovering is the hip can quite easily pop out witch is then a 999 job and have been told the pain is horrendous i broke this hip once and know how painfull it can be so am beeing very careful not to rush things

It's the limited movement.Less than 90 degrees from the hip.

did ask my wife about the opp that you will be having hunter as she works on a ward for these kind off opps she said it is very painful and she has seen grown men in tear after this opp i think they have to put a block on the shoulder to freeze it and you have morphine on tap but most do not regret the decision to have it done affter recovery

When i had my hip replacement first day after op get out of bed instant no PAIN 4 weeks later riding my sister-in-laws trike back from Sc**thorpe NO PROBLEMS SINCE

few pics for you kev as you know my old girl died shortly after giving birth and left me a load of pups to feed every 2 hours day and night !!! i been at it 3 weeks now and they are still here what a night mare but i am weaning now and might get some sleep soon

They look fantastic stump full credit to you, you are though the worst of it now so you should be-able to get back in to a normal sleeping pattern, they look really healthy mate be proud of your self for doing what  you have done for the survival of the pups

actual that's a good idea spanners. i know there are a lot of members hear who keep pets and who are big animal lovers and occasional we do like to give our pets a mention......  a pets corner would be nice or pets picture gallery

{Stands up and salutes} You should be proud of yourself for that Stumpy. I`ve had to do that for a pair of goat kids that lost their mum to a fox attack two days after they were born. She was defending her babies and did a good job too, I found the fox down the road and it`s injuries were so bad, smashed ribs and what sounded like a punctured lung, one eye was missing and blood everywhere, so I necked it to put it out of it`s misery. Poor old mum though, and she weren`t no spring chicken, died from a throat wound that I couldn`t stop the bleeding from. Anyway the two little nannys came into the cottage in front of the fire and were fed milk from one of the other mothers we had, we had a couple of weeks of sleepless nights but was worth it. Eventually one of them became a mother herself and did very well too, the other one? Well it`s like this..............................................she spit roasted really well about 2 years later and even went into a really wicked curry the next day. After all it`s what we bred them for. ;D ;D ;D ;D

Blooming heck city boys like me can't comprehend such things.. Hats off to being mum or nanny for the kids mmm :)

I'm the same Steve -live in the countryside, but wouldn't have a clue what to do with an injured animal. Way too soft hearted to eat something I'd reared!

well first job since the opp is to get vmax1200 trike in for mot tomorow, not taken one in with out rear mudguards on before.......but if there not there he cant test them and if he cant test them he cant fail them....................but all said and done it is a legal requrement that they be fitted when riding on the public highway

from what i recall there needed for msva but not mot?? work that out :D
