Suitably chastised.
O.K, you lot, you'd better start thinking of some suitable photo locations then. Something that illustrates your chosen season & the fun of riding? Maybe we can persuade professional photograffickers Wizz or Yodie to do the honours for us?

I think I probably am. Same may go for Yoda. Everyone assumes that Yoda will do everything for free - take their photos, build their web sites, design stuff - but he's a professional and it's his business too and it's just plain taking the piss to assume that he'll do it for free because he's a mate.

Rant over.

And I have quite enough calendars.

Ok joking aside how much would you charge to do something like this as it is for 2008 i'm sure something could be sorted and spread over the year, I'm more than happy to chip in but also need to find out printing costs to see if it's going to work so if you have any ideas roughly then thats a start

Right come on guys we are still short on people/trikes/bikes for the calendar.
So far up to now I have on my list:-

April - Twisted Patience
May -  Ska-man2
June- trikerpete
July - Flap
Oct - Janie-postie
Nov - Panthershaun & Bobcat
Dec - Group Photo

as you can see we are missing some months out. I have decided to stand down from Jan as I feel this should have you lot in it, I don't even own my own trike, So stick you names down then we can get the ball rolling for 2008.

There are 145 registered members on this forum -& about 2 dozen who post regularly. You take an active role in it all so as far as I'm concerned you're as much a part of the Manky crew as anyone else Hon.

Noooooooo!  I don't want January!  Far too cold!   Any month will do!

I have a friend who's a good amateur photographer - wonder if she'd like to take some phots for us?  Thing is, are we going to get them all done together (ish) or do they want to reflect the month?  In which case they all have to be done seperately..........  which might be easier than getting peeps together...  tho there is the Monkey nuts run and the Cornish trip as opportunities!

Apr - Twisted
May - Ska-man
June - Trikerpete
July - Flap

October will be Jacko, Janie's Dad, on his VW trike. Janie herself & partner Dave are more than welcome to pick a month though. As they're 50s freaks maybe a nice arty black & white shot of them riding under the railway arches outside the Ace Cafe or something?
If it's a calendar, the pages really ought to reflect their respective months I think. Any ideas for locations?

In that case it might be easier if each of us gets someone we know who's a good amateur to do their picture in the appropriate month in whatever they consider to be a photogenic location in their own area?  They could have several, and submit them to the great Manky one to make the final choice?

Title: Re: Manky 2008 Calendar

One small problem ;D anyone in the calender after Sept needs to have taken their pics already if Andy wants to get it ready for next year, and I may be a little loose with Sept.
I do have some pics taken in Nov, they don't look very seasonal as we haven't had a season so far this/last year.

Title: Re: Manky 2008 Calendar
Post by: tazet on January 14, 2007, 07:44:17 PM
Very true was thinking that as he's got to find someone who can actually print them out, and what the deadline would be, so yes thats a good idea for the later months, and also the group on can be taken at the monkey run as everyone will be in the same place just won't be very wintery though

Title: Re: Manky 2008 Calendar

Slaughtered yes - but that's a different matter!

 ;D

Well I guess it may be difficult to get it done for next year if we got to have seasonal pics.....

Title: Re: Manky 2008 Calendar
Post by: Manky Monkey on January 14, 2007, 11:28:41 PM
I dunno. There's snow forcast for February so Winter shots could be taken then. Anyone got a stash of Santa hats for the group photo?! Or are we just gonna take a Summer one but use it as the last image in the calendar -either December or a 13th page.
I'm assuming we need to take high resolution digital piccies.
No idea how long printing & binding takes -can't be that long can it? I used to deliver to a printing business but they've recently moved. I'll try & track them down. How big do we want these calendars? A4? While we're on the subject of printing by the way, Bob the T shirt guy's new machine will print large glossy posters. If you fancy a poster of your favourite piccie it can be arranged. I don't know if he's got the technology to produce calendars but I'll ask.
I thought it'd be nice to have a large colour pic of the bike/trike in a nice location, with a smaller arty black & white portrait shot of the owner, overlapping it in one corner. Just something a little more interesting than one piccie with a blank border around it.
Any other suggestions?

Title: Re: Manky 2008 Calendar
Post by: BikerGran on January 14, 2007, 11:38:21 PM
Are we doing this for ourselves only or going to sell them for charity?

I know someone on another forum who was involved in producing a calendar, I could ask whether they got theirs done by a printer or via the internet - there are various places that do it but they're a bit pricy.  But then we are talking about a lot of large photos!

It'd be difficult taking Autumn photos any time other than autumn cos of the colours.

Title: Re: Manky 2008 Calendar
Post by: Manky Monkey on January 14, 2007, 11:53:51 PM
I'm easy Bobbi -charity, (MonkeyWorld?), or private. I don't mind.
How many do you think we're talking of? 20? 50? Hopefully those left over will sell alongside the normal merchandise. My sister had a one-off calendar of piccies of her son done as a Christmas present via the 'net. May be cheaper to use a proper printer though if we want a large number done.
Critch has got some nice Autumnal shots of his Harley here:
http://mankymonkeymotors.co.uk/Bikespageimages/critch/harley.html
Is he on the list?

Title: Re: Manky 2008 Calendar

Surely the magnificent Mr Yodles & his BMW engined behemoth should be on the list?
Without him there wouldn't be a website.
Spoke to Bob the T shirt guy today. He doesn't do calendars but recommended these guys for printwork.

No mention of calendars in their flyer, although they do traditional picture postcards, so I've emailed them. I'll let you know if I get a reply.

Hi Andy
Thanks for your enquiry,I'd like to be able to help but with print
the unit price comes down with quantity. Our minimum run is well
above the number you require and the finishing prices for even a
simple calendar is very expensive.
A company who might be able to help is called C3,a Bristol-based
firm on 01179 637507,they are digital printers more able to print
small run jobs.
Hope this is of help.
Regards
Dave Robinson

Couldn't some of the proceeds go towards the running of this site Andy?

I've found some software that i have kicking about to make calendars so will have a play and work out the costs to get the paper, etc, thats needed and if its not too expensive i will do a rough test run and see how it goes. My printer is a prety good one so that should cope with high quality printing. If it all works at a cheeper rate then it will make the thing cheeper to buy for you guys.  ;)

Sounds good. Would have to be pretty heavy paper. Card really. Plus we'd need to punch it & ring bind it or staple it.
I'm still hunting for printers locally but no luck yet.
Presumably we need pages around A4 size?

Post by: tazet on January 22, 2007, 11:10:59 PM
as soon as i get a chance i will have a look around, possibly the weekind and see if i can get a rough cost. Think the main thing will be ink. You can buy ring binder thingys quite cheep now.

Title: Re: Manky 2008 Calendar

Right- first mock up of the calendar lay-out, as produced by Miss Tazet. We'll shrink the piccies a little to give a wider border for the spiral binding & the hole to hang it up with.
Personally, I also think the oval logo should be on the picture page, rather than the date one. Yes, we know it's this year's dates, not 2008! Any constructive criticisms?

Oh, & by the way, Brit Chopper have just come up with a stunningly original idea -a forum calendar, with seasonal piccies of members' rides. Wonder where they got that from? Gits.

Title: Re: Manky 2008 Calendar
Post by: BikerGran on January 25, 2007, 12:57:38 AM
Good layout but i do think the person's Forum name should be on there maybe like

BikerGran (Bobbi)

if you must have the real name.  And if we didn't build it ourselves, do you want the builders name?  What about a few details about the vehicle?

I guess you could inset the logo at some convenient point in the pic but if it's a very arty pic it might spoil it rather, unless it's so small it doesn't notice, which rather defeats the object anyway!

Title: Re: Manky 2008 Calendar
Post by: tazet on January 25, 2007, 06:42:39 AM
We did think about what to put as far a writing is concirned and like you said not everyone built there own and also not everyone has names for their modes of transport. I thnk you are right about the forum name, but that can be the choice of the person in the pic as to what they want to be called.
I think if we have the vehicle name followed by engine size/type and in your case conversion. As far as other builders other that the owners Andy will have to decide on that as its advertising for another company (for free).

What did you have in mind as the "few details about the vehicle" can i have an example please. We have to be carefull as there is not that much space at the bottom of the picture, and we did think about putting the logo on the bottom left corner so as its on the main picture too.

I will have another play about as Andy wants the picture moving etc.

Title: Re: Manky 2008 Calendar
Post by: Manky Monkey on January 25, 2007, 02:51:51 PM
Tazet's computer's just crashed big time but hopefully if she's lost the calendar info we can work from the copy she emailed to me. Hope it's not dead, just resting Hon!

Calendar- I was thinking, shrink the pics a little to give a half inch border around them -that'll give room for the binding between the pages plus the hole punched at the top to hang it up from.
Move the text under the photo across to the right a bit then add the red oval logo in the left bottom corner below the main piccie. Realistically, there's only room for about 3 lines of text so what should that be? Owner's name -either real or forum. Vehicle name if it has one & basic model, cc etc info? Giving a builder's business name doesn't bother me -we're not in business, just enthusiastic ammateurs, so not competing with anybody.
On the dates page, remove the small boxes around the numbers so there's just one big box for each day with the number in one corner, (gives more writing room). Remove the red logo strips, make the "January" lettering a little less solid black, (maybe red & cream?), & shift it over to the left then add "mankymonkeymotors.co.uk" on the right.

What does the panel think?

Shaun -don't worry mate  :) just grabbing the chance to have a little friendly dig at our "rivals". Also thought it would show that should Brit Chopper produce something similar, we haven't just followed their lead.
Tazet's worked hard on this though -& already invested a wadge of her own money in papers & inks to print it on her own high quality printer, so she deserves to get the credit for adopting the idea & seeing it through. Thank you Tazzie. x
I've spoken to a couple of print firms & they're all talking of several hundred copies minimum -we may only need a couple of dozen, so home printing's probably the answer. Once it's all on file, she can run off copies to order. Bob, our T shirt printer, should also be able to print glossy poster sized copies of the pics on request.

Title: Re: Manky 2008 Calendar
Post by: Manky Monkey on January 25, 2007, 03:03:26 PM
Everyone moans at magazine photoshoots which have a model draped all over the bits of the bike you want to see, so I thought the main pic should be the bike/trike/rod/whatever stood alone in all it's glory. Then a smaller pic of the owner, overlapping the main one. That's more interesting than just one big piccie isn't it? Portraits always look nicer in black & white, plus it'd get visually confusing if both pics were in colour.

Title: Re: Manky 2008 Calendar
Post by: lunatic on January 25, 2007, 05:17:38 PM
I like the layout as it is. I dont think you need a spec sheet bit, if people want to find out what bits you used they can just look at the features on the site. Black and white portraits look cool too.

Title: Re: Manky 2008 Calendar
Post by: flap on January 25, 2007, 05:35:33 PM

Title: Re: Manky 2008 Calendar
Post by: Manky Monkey on January 25, 2007, 11:43:38 PM
Sorry, multi-tasking here!
Right, my input then:
I reckon the potrait pic needs to come down a little lower so that the text fits in beside it, rather than extending below it. The red logo to the left needs to be just the oval logo, not an oval on a red background, & in the white space below the main pic, not overlapping it -I'll email you a couple of examples Tazzie.
The logos need to go from the dates page & the "January" should be in red & cream but not too "in yer face".
How's that?
                      Andy, Lord of the Mank.

Hang on, I'll go & rummage in MY Pictures. Back soon.
Not trying to impose my tastes on the majority here, just trying to be constructive. Anyone else fancy a different layout? A different style altogether maybe? This one's just how I personally saw it looking. If we go with this, all the bike shots will have to be landscape style, (sideways), & all the people pics portrait style, (vertical). No reason why the portraits can't be in different corners though to suit other bike pics.

Tazet's producing these with her own money so obviously we need to make sure she's reimbursed. I don't want anyone being out of pocket for the sake of the site.
As she says though, like the other merchandise, not a profit making venture. As cheap as we can make them.

Only asking! Don't suppose it can be cos we need room at the bottom of the piccie page for the binding to attach it to the dates page don't we.
Just thought that as it's our website calendar, maybe the logo should be a little more prominent, but I'm quite happy with it as it is if it would cause too much work or look wrong.
Very nice work missus. A+ & a gold star for you.

What do you think? Would it look wrong if it was bigger? It'd reduce the size of the binder margin so maybe just leave it as it is? I dunno.

Title: Re: Manky 2008 Calendar

Personally I think that's better, but what do you think? Is that now too small a margin to put the binding in? Don't want the ring binder actually touching the logo -there should be a clear gap I think, but don't know how much binding room we need.

Yeah, that's good. Nice shot of him -doesn't look too posed. Have to wait for his reaction cos he's just left for 2 weeks in Scotland, driving 8 wheel drive Army trucks with the T.A, but I reckon he'll like it.
A quick email from Brock. He says the bottom of the logo should be in line with the bottom of the portrait shot. Not sure from your piccie if it is or not, but he's right.
Do you think the logo should be the smaller size? So there's a gap between it & the bottom of the main pic?

Title: Re: Manky 2008 Calendar

Yeah, needs to be one piccie of the vehicle, (s), rather than two I think or it'd spoil the layout. Maybe a location that'd emphasise the traditional Britishness of the vehicles? A nice English country lane in Springtime with the Pop pointing in one direction & the Panther leant against a signpost pointing the other way? Or both vehicles sat at a county crossroads? A meadow with a picnic laid out on the grass in front of the Pop with The Panther to one side? I dunno. Or just bite the bullet & choose one vehicle or the other.

Just saying the calendar pic needs to be a single photograph, whether that's of one vehicle or two doesn't matter. Two seperate pics on one calendar page would look wrong.

Title: Re: Manky 2008 Calendar
Post by: panthershaun on January 28, 2007, 07:47:50 PM
its going to be one photo with the 2 vehicles if I get my finger out and build my Pop in time. If not it will just be me and Bobcat ;D

Needs to be the vehicle, (s), on their own -that was the idea, cos everyone always moans about glamorous models draped over the bits of the machines they want to see. Then a seperate portrait of the owner as Tazet's done with Flappy.

That is just SO wrong!
Post Office caps? Do they still issue those? I used to be the only guy who wore one in our office. Proper peaked army style cap, not the numpty baseball cap type they wear now.

Right the template for the year 2008 is set now all I need is pictures over the course of the year. Just send them to Manky. Obviously they need to be in by the end of November the latest otherwise I won't be able to get them printed, and sent in time for Xmas and new year.
There is still February and September to fill up. I will do one month if needed, and if you want we can put Micky on the other one providing we can get a decent picture of him.

You guys happy with all this then ?? and the lay out ???

As soon as the equipment has been bought and some stuff printed we should have an idea on cost, so as soon as we know we will post how much the calendars will be, and if there is any profit then this will probably go to Monkey World.

What do you reckon?

Capital T required on 'the'. Apostrophes not speech marks around 'The Flapster'. On second line, one space needed between 'Owner/builder' and the dash to match the space between the dash and 'Flap'. (And the 1st January 2007 is a Tuesday!).

Pedantic? Yep. It's my job...

Right no pictures received as of yet to go on the calendar. Manky has found somewhere that will bind it up for us all I do it print it out for them.
As far as the pictures go Manky wants scenic pictures taken with only your chosen mode of transport in one picture and another of just a torso/head shot of yourself in it and as seasonal to the relevant month as possible. All as good a quality as you can make it please.

Here is a reminder list to jog your memory's ;D

Jan - Yoda
Feb -
Mar -
Apr - Twisted
May - Ska-man
June - Trikerpete
July - Flap
Aug - BikerGran
Sept - Manky (get the trike sorted)
Oct - janie-postie & Dave
Nov - panthershaun
Dec - Group

Still 2 vacant places

I'm tempted to tell you to go back & read the whole thread again Dave!
Right, we need a nice, good quality shot of your ride, relevant to the month it's going in, (ie, no good photographing your bike in a snowdrift if it's going to illustrate July -actually, knowing the vagaries of the British Summer, that might be more appropriate). Just the vehicle stood on it's own in a suitably photogenic spot.
Rods are as welcome as bikes & trikes by the way.
We also need a decent portrait shot of the owner, (head & shoulders).
Shauny, I reckon a shot of my part stripped Pop in a dusty old barn somewhere would be pretty good actually!

Just to let you know, I'd still like Jacko to be October.  But he hasn't ridden his trike anywhere this year for me to photograph!  He was thinking of taking it over to Basingstoke Festival of Transport on Sunday?

Failing that, anyone know of any good locations for a Hallowe'en themed background?

Title: Re: Manky 2008 Calendar

Jan - Yoda  ???
Feb - janie/Dave
Mar -
Apr - Twisted
May - Ska-man
June - Trikerpete
July - Floral Flappy
Aug - BikerGran
Sept - Manky ?
Oct - Jacko (janie's dad)
Nov - panthershaun
Dec - Group

Right thats the list full so far as somewhere along the line Jacko got mislayed  :o If there are still forum members out there who would like to go in the calendar then just put yourself down and we (Manky and I) will have to flip coins on who goes in. If you have decided on not going in then please remove your name from the list. If we get enough interest in this then we might make it a yearly thing and those who didn't make the 2008 one will be in the 2009.
Those who are in it can you please send your pictures by the end of October so I can get them printed and sent out to those that want them before the new year.
  Thank you all

We haven't managed to get a decent group shot yet, so December could still be open if anyone wants to claim it. How about a pic of as many Monkies as we can mustor at the Wokingham Christmas toy run?
Janie, re Jacko's Halloween trike pic, you could try The Holy Ghost churchyard here in Basingstoke. Catholic graveyard so lots of gothic headstones. Also a ruined chapel. Might make a nice black & white shot?
Famous for being the spot where the unfortunate Mrs Blunden was accidentally buried alive in 1674.

POSTPONED.
We've just run out of time on this one I'm afraid. Not had enough input to go ahead with it. So we'll postpone it till next year, but will need your bike. trike or rod photos, in a suitably seasonal setting relevant to your chosen month, (vehicle on it's own plus a seperate head & shoulders portrait shot of the owner/s), by the end of September by the latest.

To do them we obviously need 12 vehicles & their owners Pete. So far we haven't got half that. It'd be a very short year.

As Manky said we only have 4 members pictures and we still have 2 months with no-one allocated. 2008 calendars are already in the shops and have been for a month or so. We have the paper to do the pages but the cost of the ink is a little over our budget at the moment. Yes it would have been good to have it done for this year but we just can't see how it is possible. We need 8 members pictures and loads of ink within the next week, then I have to set up each page. We want the pictures to be as relevent to the month as possible so old ones taken in the summer, (if you are in a summer month) are fine. Also if we get snow then it gives the winter ones a chance. It's nearly November now and will take a week or 2 to get them all printed, then we have to take them to the place that Manky found and get them bound and I don't know how long that process takes.

awww, such a shame.  I feel I've contributed to the hold-up of this publication.  I'm truly sorry guys.  If I take a picture of Jackos trike, perhaps I can photoshop it onto a graveyard background?  Would that do?

Slapped wrists all round, but no point rushing it. Might as well do the job properly if people are gonna be looking at us on their garage walls all year!  :)
Just bear it in mind for next year please guys. If you're out & about & spot a good location, take a few snaps of your vehicle & send 'em in. Remember, we want the vehicle -bike, trike or car, on it's own. Then we'll add a black & white portrait shot of the owner in one corner of the page. Not just nice locations -the weather's important too. We want to show the custom scene all year round, so we'll need a few of you to show your vehicles in rain, snow, dramatic stormy skies, rainbows, etc.
At least we should have a few more machines on the road to photograph next year!

hi, do you still have the photos that we sent in for 2007! :)

i hope so coz i may not have a trike, on the road, this summer. must get around to letting my vw go to new home so i can put money together with that  of our camper (which is going to be for sale soon) that way we can upgrade our camper status for this summer. then i can concentrate on getting to work on my bmw trike, its not going to be a "6 week build" this time as i have some thoughts on the "little touches" to it which will all take time.

Hi Pete, yes we still have pictures of you and your trike. Any chance you could send one of it on it's own as I think the ones you sent had you all sitting on it. We're having the main picture as the vehicle picture and then we're inserting a black & white portrait pic of the owner or in your case "family"  ;D

This calendar is open for everyone. Cars, trikes, bikes, hot rods, anything mechanical.
Still some empty months to be filled.

Ok so now it looks like we are aiming for 2010. We have Chrisj on the forum who can get them bound but we might have to change the design slightly. We still need photos though as there are empty months to fill.

I was thinking the same thing Mr Shabbs. A nice moody workshop shot would look cool. We're planning on having colour pics with a black & white portrait of the owner inset in one corner, so it'd have to be muted colours or sepia or whatever rather than black & white for the main pic.
Taz & I have got 4 projects on the go between us -at this rate we'll be able to fill the calendar on our own!  :P

It's something we would love to do. It was going to be for 2008 but as you can see we didn't get enough people. We would still like to do one for 2009 if we can fill it so yes.

Title: Re: Manky 2008 Calendar

Could do now I suppose. When I came up with the idea I didn't have anything to out in it and was just a member. I wasn't even with Manky then and was quite happy with just making the thing up and printing it out. I suppose Jan would be good for me as my Birthday is then.
Idealy we would need photos in by the beginning of November the latest to have time to print everything off and get then made into calendars in time for xmas this year. Doubt mine will be ready then,

Maybe not, but you could do one of the build, checked shirt, safety goggles and huge gloves on, angle grinder in hand, sparks flying off a spare bit of tube, after all, we do build stuff in this forum as well as ride it.

I've just seen this subject.

Did / are /  will - any  calendars  come about?

Could be a nice, long term running project.

Yeah so long term it's been what 2 years and not enough members vehicles to add. If we get enough interest then yes we will do this but if not it will just sit here as an idea. We are not going to force people to submit their photos.

Will have a look back at the list. From what I remember we had lots of names but not many photos. Give me a min and I'll have a look at what we have. Luckly it's all on my laptop and not Manky's poorly computer.

Ok just trawled through the last 20 pages and this is the list as last checked.

2010 Calendar-

Jan - Tazet
Feb - Davesatan ------- Got pics
Mar -
Apr - Twisted
May - Ska-man -------- Got pics
June - Trikerpete ------ Got pics
July - Flap ------------- Got pics
Aug - BikerGran
Sept - Manky
Oct - Janie-postie & Dave
Nov - Panthershaun
Dec - Group?

As you can see lots of names, (one month short) but not everyone has submitted photos.
If you would like to be in the calendar then please add your name and email the photos to me please. We want a shot of your vehicl on it's own in a scenic spot, (preferably with weather to suit your chosen month) and a portrait shot of yourself, (shoulders up) all in as big a size photo as you can please as I need it to be reasonable quality for printing out and it will be the size of A4 ish.

If you want the December slot then it must have a Christmas theme to the photos please.

I was all poised to send the phot of my trike along when the idea of a shot of the rider as well was introduced - I have hardly any pics of me and can't find any that I'd want anyone else to look at!  So I never sent the trike pics along...........

What about the photo of you that you sent in to go on the people section of the main site. If you have a full size version of that I can crop it down a bit.
We are looking for normal people and as it's a forum thing it doesn't matter what you look like so long as you have more clothes on than the photos Davesatan sent in.  ;D

No it hasn't. Funny you should say that as we were only talking about it yesterday and said we need some more photos to add to it. Also the old biker photos hasn't been added to for a long time. Hint hint everyone  ;D PS cant add them till Manky's computer comes back but could gather stuff ready.

Title: Re: Manky 2008 Calendar

Bobbi. We're looking for shots of the owners/builders, not glamour models -not that you're not glamourous of course! :-*
People always complain about bike & car calendars having models draped all over the vehicles, obscuring the bits you want to look at. We'd rather see real people, with their machines. So we thought a nice shot of the vehicle, whether it's a bike, trike or car, in a photogenic location, preferably reflecting the month of the year that it'll be displayed on, (among Spring flowers for the Spring months, on a sea front or in a meadow for the Summer, in the rain in Autumn, snow in Winter -whatever. You get the idea). Even a nice moody workshop shot of an unfinished project might work well. Then a smaller head n shoulders portrait shot of the owner, looking natural & unposed, overlaid on one corner of the main pic. The layout's already decided & should be around here somewhere. You don't have to look glamourous, or ruffty tuffty, just natural.
The calendar idea's been hanging around for a couple of years now, but obviously needs input from you lot. Too late in the year now to sell them really, but bear it in mind when you're out & about this year & we'll gather together material for the 2010 edition.
