“THE GUZZLERS” -BASINGSTOKE ROD & CUSTOM CLUB. I’ve known Doug Newell for …probably 15 years now. I used to deliver the mail to his engineering company & soon started blagging favours from him for my various projects. A spacer here, an adapter there, wheel spindles, shims, brackets. I think he’s had a hand in most of my machines over the years. He’s a big fan of custom cars & has often told me about his Zephyr, a long term project that seems to have been on the go as long as I’ve known him. Today I finally got to see it. Very nice! Should look great when it’s finally finished! |

He belongs to a local custom car club called The Guzzlers who meet on the third Tuesday of every month at The Hatch pub on the outskirts of Basingstoke, Hants. Several members share a rented barn nearby where they store & work on their machines. Not much to see there at the moment as a couple of them are out for paintwork but the snapshots here show Doug’s 5 litre small block Ford engined ‘59 Zephyr, a nice old Volvo Amazon saloon, a Moggy |

Minor Traveller & a split screen VW camper. There’s also normally an 8 litre big block Chevy engined ‘59 Humber & a Pop. The club also boasts an AC Cobra, a Chevy Corvette, a ‘34 roadster & the Opel Record C coupe that I’ve already posted in the “Street Cars” section. Doug has agreed to write profiles on all the on-going projects in the barn, hopefully with regular updates & maybe a piece on each of the other club cars. Hope he realises what he’s taking on! It’ll be nice to have a fresh voice on the site & of course, will give he & his fellow Guzzlers somewhere to show off their machinery. Welcome aboard chaps. |
